Women’s Soccer Nipped by Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio. – The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team fell, 2-1, to Toledo here Friday afternoon at Scott Park. Freshman Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) tallied her team leading fifth goal of the year but it was not enough as the Eagles fell to 6-8-2 (3-6 MAC) on the year while Toledo improves to 6-7-3 (5-2-1 MAC).
For the game, Toledo out shot EMU 17-9 with freshman Monquie Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair Secondary) making eight saves.
There was no scoring in the first half but Toledo got on the board first at the 56:31 mark of the second half as Sarah Hazenfield scored an unassisted goal at to take a 1-0 lead.
EMU responded with the equalizer in the 61st minute as Kinter took a feed from freshman Maggie Christensen (Orlans Parks, Ill.-AA Stagg) and got in alone about 25 yards out and connected on a shot to the far post which got past the outstretched reach of senior UT goalkeeper Jen Whipple tie the score at 1-1.
At the 78:34 mark, Budani tackled Toledo’s Molly Cornwell inside the box and drew a foul resulting in penalty shot. Cornwell scored the game winning goal on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Rockets the 2-1 victory.
EMU continues its road swing with a conference match at Bowling Green Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m.
