Volleyball Rockets Past Toledo, 3-0

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team snapped a nine-match losing streak with a thrilling 3-0 (30-21, 30-22, 30-21) sweep over a visiting University of Toledo squad Wednesday night here at the Convocation Center. Senior Lindsay Piccolini and junior Becky Reenders recorded double digits in kills for the Eagles (6-14 overall, 1-8 MAC), who claimed their first Mid-American Conference victory of the season. With the loss, Toledo falls to 6-16 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
In the opener, the two squads battled back and fourth until EMU went on a 7-3 run to take a 22-18 lead. The Eagles advantage continued to grow the rest of the game, as EMU took the first set by a score of 30-21. Piccolini chalked up seven kills and two block assists in the game, while Becky Reenders added three kills and a pair of block assists.
In the second game, Toledo jumped on the board first but the Eagles roared back to take its first lead of the game at 8-7. From that point on the Green and White never looked back, as Eastern took the game by a score of 30-22, to take a 2-0 mark heading in to the intermission. Becky Reenders led the way with a three kills and two blocks while Piccolini recorded three kills and five block assists.
In the finale, Eastern Michigan started strong out of the gate taking a 6-5 lead and saw its advantage grow on the strength of 15-5 run. Toledo made a late rally but was never able to get any closer, as EMU took the game and the match.
Piccolini led the Bulls with a 17 kills on 32 attacks while also adding nine blocks. Becky Reenders finished with 10 kills and five blocks, and freshman Victoria Randolph recorded six kills, eight digs and three blocks. Junior Katie Bates also got into the mix adding six kills and tying a career-high with four blocks.
Junior setter Kate Sulewski recorded 37 assists and eight digs while and senior libero Ashley Cudney finished with a team-high 18 digs.
The Rockets were led by Stephanie Kersting and Sarah Kreher with 10 kills apiece kills. Ashley Rucki added 16 digs for the Midnight Blue and Gold while Shannon Strachan tallied seven kills and two blocks.
The EMU volleyball team return to action Saturday afternoon, Oct. 21, hosting rival Ball State University in a Homecoming showdown at the Convocation Center. The Eagles will celebrate its 2005 MAC West Division Championship during the match, as the team unveils the championship banner during the intermission between the second and third games of the match. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
