Eagles Conclude Strong Fall Campaign with Fifth Place Finish at the Shootout at the Legends

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team capped off a successful fall season with a fifth place showing at the Shootout at the Legends at the par-72, 6,073-yard Legend Golf Course. Junior Catherine Fortin led the way for the Eagles, firing an even-par 216 (75-73-68) to finish tied for second place. The runner-up showing was Fortin’s best finish of the fall and marked her fifth career top five finish and 16th career top 20 showing.

Fortin’s third-round 68 is the lowest of any EMU golfer this season and is one stroke shy of her career-low 67 set last year at the Rocket Fall Classic, Sept. 10, 2005, at Heather Downs Country Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Senior Katie Strawser followed with a 224 (75-72-77) for a 13th place showing, while sophomore Stephany Fleet added a 227 (75-77-75) for a 26th place. Sophomore Courtney Aili fired a career-best round of 72 to finish with a 229 (77-80-72) in 35th place and freshman Marjorie Thuot rounded out the lineup with a 236 (76-80-80).

As a team, the Eagles finished fifth with a school-record score of 895 (301-302-292) as Campbell University ran away with the tournament title carding a 877 (300-287-290).

The 895 breaks the previous low set just last season by the Eagles as the Rocket Spring Classic, April 17-18, the Dornoch Golf Club. EMU’s third round 292 is also a school-record for the lowest single round, breaking the previous mark of 295 set last year at the Rocket Fall Classic.

Eastern Michigan will return to action when it opens its spring schedule Feb. 12-13, 2007 at the Baja Invitational in Ensenada, Mexico.
