Fleet Claims Third at Wolverine Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University sophomore Stephany Fleet (Dewitt. Mich.-Dewitt) continued her strong play with a third consecutive top-five showing, turning in a third-place finish at the prestigious Wolverine Invitational here at the U-M Golf Course, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Competing against some of the region's best golfers, the Dewitt, Mich. native carded a 73 in the final round to finish with a 223, just one stroke out of a playoff for the tournament title.
As a team, the Eagles placed seventh with a team score of 935 (312-317-306) as the University of Michigan took home the invitational hardware with a 906 (305-295-06). The Wolverines made it a double victory as Brianna Broderick captured medalist honors with a nine-over 222 (70-77-75) by downing Ohio State's Dana Je on the event's third playoff hole.
Fleet had a solid two days, finishing just two strokes shy of her career best 54-hole score of 221 set just last week at the Lady Irish Invitational, Sept. 23-24, in South Bend. Ind. The three-round score was also the lowest total ever posted by an EMU golfer in the seven years that the Eagles have competed in the event. The previous low of 228 was set by Heather Nolan in a third-place showing, Oct. 14-15, 2005.
Overall, the third-place finish marked the sophomore's fifth career-top 10 finish and sixth consecutive top 15 showing dating back to the EKU Spring Invitational, April 6-8, 2006. In eight rounds this fall, Fleet is averaging a team low and Mid-American Conference low 74.4 stokes per 18 holes.
Junior Catherine Fortin (Beauceville, Canada-Polyvalente St. Francois) gave the Eagles another player among the top 25, after carding a 75 to finish tied for 15th with a 228 (76-77-75). Sophomore Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) followed with a 240 (82-80-80) for a 43rd place tie while junior Paola Sanchez (Bogata, Columbia-Cedar Springs (Mich.) turned in a 244 (82-84-78) for 49th. Redshirt freshman Marjorie Thout (Joliette, Ouebec) rounded out the lineup with a 247 (82-82-83) for 54th place.
Playing as an individual, senior Katie Strawser (Flushing, Mich.-Flint Powers Catholic) recorded rounds of 78, 84 and 78 to tie for 40th.
The Eagles are next in action Oct. 9-10 at the Legends of Indiana Shootout in Indianapolis, Ind.
