Eagles win four matches in MAC opener
YPSILANTI, Mich. –– The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team came up with four individual wins but it just wasn’t enough as the Eagles fell to Ohio University, 19-12, here Thursday (Jan. 5) in the Mid-American Conference dual opener for both squads. The loss drops EMU to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MAC while Ohio improves to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in league action.
Interim Head Coach John Lange’s Eagles started the dual with a 8-1 victory by freshman Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum) over Caleb Metcalf at 125 pounds. Ohio won the next two matches, at 133 and 141, before EMU’s Jermain Thompson (Akron, Ohio-Kenmore), ranked 17th in the country, disposed of Ohio’s Aaron Gomoll, 10-3, at 149 pounds.
At 157 pounds, EMU's Quinn Guernsey (Horton, Mich.-Columbia Central (Michigan State)) captured his first victory of the season, an 11-10 decision over Mike Grandominico, which gave the Eagles a 9-6 advantage midway through the match. The Bobcats responded though as Kent Smith defeated Chad Roush (Davison, Mich.-Davison), 10-4, but EMU bounced back as Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio/Salem) tallied a 10-7 victory over Ryan Knapp to give Eastern a three-point edge, 12-9, heading into the final three matches.
Ohio proved to be up to the challenge though as the Bobcats swept the final three matches to claim the 19-12 victory. Ryan Knapp handed John McClure (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa (Central Michigan)) a 16-6 major decision setback at 184 while Larry Reichard claimed a 3-0 victory over Tony Lyssiotis (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) at 197. In the finale at 285, Marcus Adelman defeated freshman Jake Wood (Miamisburg, Ohio-Miamisburg), 7-3.
Eastern will remain home this weekend for a non-conference tilt Sunday, Jan. 8, against ninth ranked Lehigh. Action begins at 5 p.m. in venerable Bowen Field House.
