Eagles Open Against the Cardinals: The Eastern Michigan University women’s gymnastics team opens the 2006 regualar season Friday, Jan. 20, traveling to Muncie, Ind. to face Ball State University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Irving Gymnasium.
The Coaches: EMU head coach Steve Wilce returns for his 24rd season at the helm of the EMU program. Wilce, a three-time winner of the MAC Coach of the Year award, is the winningest gymnastics coach in EMU history. Over the years, he has compiled a 157-116 (61-56 MAC) record.
BSU is coached by Lisa Simonton, who is in her first year incharge of the Cardinals. Simonton spent the last six years as the head women’s gymnastics coach at the United State Air Force Academy, where she led a trio of gymnasts to 2005 USAG All-America status.
Eagles picked to finished Fifth: With 13 letterwinners and the 2005 Freshman Gymnast of the Year Jolene Worley returning for the 2006 season, the EMU women’s gymnastics team was picked to finish fifth in the Mid-American Conference Gymnastics Preseason Poll as voted on by the league’s coaches and announced by the conference office. The defending MAC Champion Central Michigan Chippewas were tabbed to successfully defend their conference crown.
