YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Oakland University to completed its second sweep in as many days, Saturday, Jan. 14, in Jones Natatorium. The men defeated the Golden Grizzles 139-104 while the women won 140-103. Both squads downed IUPUI yesterday in a home meet.

The Eagles’ men’s team improves to 4-1 on the season while the Golden Grizzles drop to 5-2. The victory marks the ninth straight win over Oakland and improves the all-time series to an 18-4 Eagle edge.

Despite Oakland taking first place in eight of the thirteen events, the men were able to capture the victory. Dan Wohl was the lone Eagle with dual individual wins, as he claimed the 200-IM and 200-butterfly races. Steven Bowling (1000 free), Adam Wohl (500 free), Josh Olsen (1-meter diving) also claimed first place finishes.

For the women, Madeleine Pilchard recorded two of EMU’s nine first place finishes. Pilchard won the 1000-free and the 200-backstroke events. Also claiming victories were Catherine Lee Ha (50 free), Hannah Burandt (200 free), Marie Canarecci (3-meter diving), Claire Letendre (200 butterfly), Becky Renkola (1-meter diving), Chontelle Lonsdale (200 breast) and the 400 free relay team of Pilchard, Katie Benedict, Burandt, and Lee Ha.

The win improves the women’s squad to 6-1 while the Golden Grizzles fall to 5-4. The win snaps a two meet Oakland winning streak and improves the Eagles all-time record with Oakland to 13-11.

Both teams resume Mid-American Conference play next weekend with the women facing Akron Friday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m. while the men swim against Ball State, Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. Both meets will be held in Jones Natatorium.
