YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Ball State Saturday, Jan. 21, in Jones Natatorium. The men defeated the Cardinals 148-83, while the women were victorious 140-103.

The EMU men’s team improves to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in Mid-American Conference action. The victory marked 41st consecutive MAC victory for EMU. The Cardinals fall to 1-3 and 1-2 in conference meets. The win also marked the 14th straight win over Ball State and boosts the all-time series to a 30-4 Eagle edge.

EMU used a slew of balance to defeat Ball State as eight different Eagles won individual events. Kevin Joyce (50 and 100-yard freestyle events) was the only dual winner, while Steven Hill (1650 free), Jason Piercey (200 free), Dan Wohl (400 IM), Josh Olsen (3-meter diving), Ryan Fulkerson (200 butterfly), Donald Ellison (200 backstroke) and Steven Bowling (500 free) all emerged victorious.

For the second night in a row, the women were able to defeat a visiting MAC school. Despite losing the first two events, the women were able to rebound to take seven of the next 11 events. Madeleine Pilchard was again the catalyst for the Eagles as she won the 50 and 500-yard freestyle races and was a leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. Last night, Pilchard won the 50, 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events in a 182-109 EMU victory over Akron.

Maria Canarecci swept the diving events with a 315.37 3-meter event score and a 288.07 score on the 1-meter board. Also winning events for Eastern were Hannah Burandt (200 free), Catherine Lee Ha (100 free) and Chantelle Lonsdale (200 breaststroke).

The win improves the women’s team to 8-1 on the year with a 5-1 MAC mark while Ball State drops to 5-3, with a 3-2 conference record. The win evened the all-time series to 19-19-1.

The EMU men’s squad is in action again Friday, Jan. 21, when it travels to Oxford, Ohio to face MAC rival Miami. The meet is slated to begin at 4 p.m. The final regular season meet for the women’s team will be Saturday, Feb. 4, with a MAC meet versus Buffalo at Jones Natatorium at 1 p.m.
