YPSILANTI
, Mich.--The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team was clipped by a visiting Indiana University team, 70-64, here Wednesday night in the Convocation Center. The Eagles nearly overcame a 17-point deficit, pulling within three in the game’s waning seconds. The loss snapped the Eagles’ 10-game home winning streak dating back to Jan. 8, 2005.

In her first game of the season, senior guard Ryan Coleman poured in a team-high 20 points in the setback. Senior Nikki Knapp had 18 points, senior Melis Ulker scored 11, and sophomore Kivilcim Yamanoglu added a career-best 11.

Three Hoosiers scored in double figures led by Jenny DeMuth with a game-best 24 points.

The Eagles (2-4) never led as the Hoosiers (4-4) jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 16:19 mark of the first half before the Eagles made a run to cut the lead to two. A layup and a free-throw by Knapp made the score 7-5 at the 15:24 mark.

But that would be the closest EMU got, as the
Hoosiers used a 10-4 run to take an eight-point advantage, 14-6, before the Eagles began to chip away. EMU once again pulled within a basket at 14-11 on a senior Nikki Knapp jumper at the 14-11 mark, but the Hoosiers used a 14-0 run to push the advantage to 16, 28-11.

A Coleman three-point field goal as time expired brought EMU back within nine, 33-24, as the teams headed into the locker room for halftime. Yamanoglu, starting her first-career game, paced the Eagles in the period with nine points, all coming on treys, while Coleman added six points and four boards.

The two sides traded buckets early on as EMU pulled within eight, 37-29 on a Knapp layup and foul shot with 15:24 left in the half. The Eagles got even closer as Knapp added a pair from the charity stripe while holding the Hoosier scoreless for nearly four minutes before IU pushed the score to 40-31.

A Coleman steal and fast-break layup with 10:33 pulled Eastern within five, 40-35, but each time Indiana responded with a score of its own. Indiana looked to have ended any hopes of a potential Eastern comeback, extending its lead to 55-44 with 6:08 remaining in the contest. But EMU held tough until EMU’s Ulker drained a trey with 1:54 left to make it 63-60.

The Eagles remain home this weekend hosting Horizon League foe Youngstown State Saturday, Dec. 10. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
