HONOLULU -- The
The Eagles (2-2) led just once at 6-4 as the Matadors (1-3) jumped out to a 23-11 lead at the 10:35 mark of the first half before the Eagles made a run to cut the lead to six. Three-pointers by sophomore Canea Williams and junior Sarah VanMetre's made the score at 23-17 with 10:01 left.
But that would be the closest EMU got, as CSUN went on a 9-4 spurt to take a 31-21 advantage. Another run of 10-6 prior to the half would put the Matadors up by 14 at 41-27. VanMetre connected on a long three as time expired to send the Green and Whine into the locker room down 11, 41-30.
Cal State Northridge ended any hopes of a potential Eastern comeback, extending its lead to 59-44 with 8:45 remaining in the contest. The Matadors lead grew to 18, 69-51, before the Eagles chipped away to get back within 10.
VanMetre led the Green and White with 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Senior Nikki Knapp had nine, sophomore Colleen Russell added eight and sophomore Patrice McKinney had six.
The tournament wraps up on Sunday, Nov. 27, when the Eagles face Idaho State (0-3) at 11 a.m. HST/4 p.m. EST in the tournament's seventh place game. Idaho State was downed by Washington State, 74-51, in the classic's other consolation semifinal match-up.
