Eagles lose close one point conference game after botched extra point attempt
YPSILANTI, Mich – The Eastern Michigan University football team suffered its first home loss of the season, 24-23, to visiting Miami University here at Rynearson Stadium. With the loss, EMU drops to 3-5 overall, 3-2 in the MAC and Miami moves to 4-3 and 3-2 in the MAC standings.
Eastern Michigan came from behind and pulled within one point, 24-23, with 13 seconds left in regulation on a touchdown pass from Jones to Eric Deslauriers (Gatineau, Quebec, Canada-Lennoxville Prep). Place-kicker Andrew Wellock's (Canton,-Ohio-Green) extra point attempt bounced off the right goalpost after a bad snap and hold which secured the one point victory for the RedHawks.
"I feel that we played very hard on offense, defensive and special teams," said EMU Head Coach Jeff Genyk. "We had five starters out of that game and I thought everybody played very hard and we executed on virtually everything, but the PAT field goal attempt and that was our undoing."
"Tyler Jones proved a lot of people that he can throw the ball," added Genyk, "He also is a very good athlete and his character is really what makes him. He's overcome some much in his life that a 70 drive yard drive in 1:03 is nothing."
Redshirt freshman quarterback Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) had a breakout game for the Eagles. Jones rushed for 107 yards and threw for 135 yards totaling 242 yards in total offense with three touchdowns in his first career start for the Eagles. In addition to his 28 yards touchdown pass to Deslauriers, he also connected on a seven yard scoring strike to R.J. Montemayor (Groveton, Tex., - Groveton-Cisco J.C.). Jones also ran for an eight-yard score.
For the game, EMU had two rushers who went over 100 total yards with Jones accounting for his 107 yards on 19 carries and Anthony Sherrell (Roseville, Mich.-Orchard Lake St. Mary's) tallied 107 yards on 12 carries. Defensively, The Eagles were led by safeties Rontrell Woodruff (Southfield, Mich.-Lathrop) and Corey Parker (Detroit, Mich. – DePorres) had 16 and 11 tackles respectively. Sophomore Blake Smith (Detroit, Mich. – Mackenzie) had 11 tackles, one blocked field goal and two pass defections.
Miami was led by sophomore tailback Brandon Murphy who tallied 161 yards on 33 carries with one touchdown. Senior quarterback Josh Betts competed 23-of-43 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Betts threw touchdown passes of 11 and five yards to senior wideout Martin Nance.
EMU will be idle next weekend before battling inter-state rival Western Michigan on Nov. 5 at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. at 1 p.m.
