Shawn Trice is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball program in 2024-25, where he will continue to work the Eagles’ frontcourt.
A former University of Pennsylvania standout, Trice has over 16 years of collegiate coaching experience, including a 13-year stint at Temple University.
The Eagles retained the Michigan MAC Trophy after finishing 2022-23 with a 2-1 combined record against Western Michigan and Central Michigan. Emoni Bates, who averaged 19.2 points per game, was drafted in the second round and 49th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers, marking EMU’s 15th NBA draft pick.
EMU finished 2022-23 8-23 overall and 5-13 in conference action. In his first season in Ypsilanti, Trice worked with several players, including Mo Njie, who earned a selection to the MAC All-Freshman Team following the 2021-22 season. Njie ranked seventh in the MAC and led the team with 1.1 blocks per game. He also was second on the team with 5.3 rebounds per contest. Additionally, Colin Golson, Jr., turned in a strong debut season as he scored on 46.8 percent of his shots, the 13th-best average in the league
Trice spent the 2020-21 season at Colgate College as an assistant coach, where he helped guide the Raiders to a 14-2 overall record with a 11-1 Patriot League mark. Colgate earned its fourth NCAA Tournament berth in program history last season. Trice aided in the development of All-Patriot Player of the Year Jordan Burns, and three All-Patriot honorees in Nelly Cummings (second team), Tucker Richardson (third team), and Jeff Woodward (rookie team).
The Raiders led the nation in three-point field goal defense with a 26.4 percentage. Colgate also ranked second in the NCAA averaging 85.2 points per game and third with a 40.3 three-point percentage.
Prior to his arrival to Hamilton, N.Y., Trice spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach at Temple, where he helped guide the Owls to seven NCAA Tournaments, five conference titles, and two NIT bids. During his tenure in Philadelphia, Trice helped Temple claim 10 winning seasons, including nine 20-win campaigns.
Coaching under the all-time winningest head coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history Fran Dunphy, Trice aided in the development of Temple’s frontcourt players, including Lavoy Allen, a 2011 second-round pick by the Philadelphia 76ers. He helped Allen become the program’s all-time leading rebounder and one of only three Temple players to register 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Besides Allen, Trice has helped develop several former student-athletes currently playing professionally overseas.
The Detroit, Mich. native served as an assistant at his alma mater Penn in 2005-06. He helped lead the Quakers to an Ivy League championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2005-06.
Prior to entering the coaching profession, Trice worked as a sports coordinator for the YMCA in his hometown of Detroit, Mich., for seven years. Before returning to Detroit, Trice played professional basketball overseas. He played for Kvarnby Evergreen in Sweden for a season and for Yulon Dragons in Taiwan for several months.
Trice was a two-time All-Ivy League selection at Penn, earning second team honors as a senior and honorable mention as a junior. He played a part in three-straight undefeated Ivy League seasons and participated in three NCAA Tournaments. Penn posted an 85-24 overall record during his career and a perfect 42-0 mark in his final three seasons of Ancient Eight action. As a senior, Trice scored a career-high 26 points against rival Princeton. He also led the team in rebounding in 14 of Penn’s 28 games and had 10 or more rebounds in five contests. He finished his career averaging 7.7 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game and shot 51.6 percent from the field for his career.
He graduated from Penn with a bachelor’s degree in history.
Trice makes the move to Ypsilanti with his wife, Traci, and their sons, Caleb, Carter, and Cayden.
