The 2010-11 season marks the sixth season for Derrick McDowell as associate head coach at Eastern Michigan University. McDowell was named to the post, March 30, 2005.
McDowell joined the EMU staff after turning in a highly successful high school career as well as an eight-year college coaching history.
McDowell took over the reigns as head coach during several games in 2008-09, after Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey missed several games after being diagnosed with a benign case of vertigo.
McDowell enjoyed great success in a 12-year stint as the head coach at Detroit Redford High School, leading the team to a 194-70 record. His 2004-05 Redford team won the Detroit Public School League title as well as the district championship on the way to a 19-2 record. He was named the All-Metro Detroit Team Coach of the Year by The Detroit News for his efforts that season.
During his tenure at Redford, McDowell was named Coach of the Year seven times by either the Detroit Free Press or The Detroit News. He was selected as Detroit Public School League Coach of the Year in 2000-01 and 1995-96 and was PSL West Division Coach of the Year in 2003-04. In addition, he was selected regional Coach of the Year in 2001-02, and was an All-Metro Detroit Coach of the Year in 1996-97, 2000-01, and 2004-05.
McDowell’s Redford teams were state runners-up twice (1996-97, 2001-02), made the Final Four once (2003-04), won three regional crowns (1996-97, 2001-02, 2003-04), captured seven district championships (1996-97, 1998-99, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05), won two PSL titles (2000-01, 2004-05), were runners-ups in the PSL three times (1995-96, 1999-00, 2002-03), and were PSL semifinalists twice (1996-97, 2000-01).
Prior to taking over the reins at Redford, McDowell served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Central Michigan, from 1991-93, at Wayne State University, from 1988-91, and the University of Detroit, from 1985-88.
The 48-year-old McDowell is a native of Detroit and graduated from Detroit Northern High School in 1978. He then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla. in 1983. He completed work on his master’s degree in sports administration at Wayne State University in 2003.
