    Volunteer Goalkeeper Coach
Entering his second season with the Eastern Michigan University soccer program as its goalkeeper coach in 2023, Mike Sheehy brings 33 years of coaching experience to the Ypsilanti with all his previous time spent working with collegiate, club, high school, and individual goalkeepers throughout the State of Michigan. Prior to his arrival, Sheehy worked with the keepers at both Schoolcraft College (men, 2018-22) and Detroit Mercy (women, 2012-19), where he helped three players earn Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year honors.

At the collegiate level, Sheehy has worked with Marina Manzo, Nora Abolen and Claudia Eustaquio, all of which earned the top goalkeeping honor in the Horizon League while representing the Titans. Several of his club pupils have also fared well as Bethany Kopel starred at Indiana University where she set the program’s career shutout record before playing semi-professionally for Detroit City FC.

At the club level, Sheehy has worked with goalkeepers with Michigan Hawks, Michigan Wolves, Michigan Olympic Development, Waza East, Vardar III, Force FC, Liverpool International Academy of Michigan, Michigan Bucks, Northville Soccer Club, Troy Soccer Club and Troy Dynamite. Sheehy also held additional coaching and team duties at several of those stops, including Vardar III (Academy Coach), Michigan Wolves (Head Coach, 1998-01), and both Troy SC and Dynamite (Head Coach, 1992-98).
Throughout his years working with both collegiate and club programs, Sheehy also worked in the prep ranks and he coached goalkeepers and held other positions with four high schools. He started off as the keeper coach for Farmington’s girl’s team in 1990 before being named the junior varsity head coach at Marion (1992-95). From 1997-99, he was the junior varsity head coach and the varsity associate head coach at Birmingham Groves. Most recently, he worked with the girl’s and boy’s teams as an assistant coach from 2010-22 at Cranbrook.

Prior to making the jump into the coaching ranks, Sheehy spent four years playing semi-professional soccer as a member of the Detroit Wheels (1993-96).

As a player, Sheehy was a standout in goal for Oakland where he earned All-Mid-West honors three times (1990, 1992, and 1993) for the Golden Grizzlies. A four-year starter in goal, Sheehy helped his side to the NCAA Final Four in 1992 as well. At the conclusion of his playing time, Sheehy departed OU holding the program’s record for career shutouts (35) while ranking second all-time in saves (259) and fourth in goals-against-average (0.92). Sheehy graduated from Oakland in 1995 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Prior to his collegiate days, Sheehy was a two-sport standout. On the pitch, he played for Vardar III 1972’s, who captured five Michigan state titles, finished as a regional finalist twice, and captured one national title. An all-state honorable mention at Farmington High School (1990), he was a member of the Michigan ODP from U12 through U23 and was named to its U17 regional pool. Additionally, Sheehy was an AAA Ice Hockey player for Little Caesar’s Academy where he helped the team to national championships in both 1989 and 1990.

A native of Farmington, Mich., Sheehy currently resides in Northville. He holds several coaching licenses and/or diplomas, including the US Soccer Federation National C (2015) and D (2011) licenses and an NSCAA State/Regional Goalkeeper diploma (2008).
