Eastern Michigan Athletics

What if I have never rowed before?
No Experience is necessary. We will start from the basics and teach you everything you need to know about rowing. Our focus will be to build up your fitness level and get you on the water as soon as we can! Many of our current athletes joined our team with no rowing experience and are racing in our top boats.
Who are you looking for?
We are looking for athletes who are dedicated, willing to train hard, and love to compete. Our rowers are ideally 5’8’’ or taller and our coxswains are typically around 110lbs. Everyone is welcome to try out!
How much does it cost?
There is zero cost to join our team outside of registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Eastern Michigan Women’s Rowing is a fully funded, Division I varsity sport. We issue gear sponsored by Adidas and all team travel is covered.
What is the time commitment?
We practice up to 20 hours a week when we are in-season, 2-3 hours a day Monday-Saturday. We increase the practice volume as the semester progresses. In the beginning we will practice from 6:30am-8:30am M-F and 6:30am-9:00am on Saturdays. Weight training sessions and second practices will be added in October. 12:30-1:30pm Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for Weights, and second practices on Wednesday & Friday from 3:00pm-4:30pm. We can accommodate some conflicts as needed, just communicate as early as you can.
How do I balance school with rowing?
EMU student-athletes have access to our Student Athlete Support Services (SASS). These services include but are not limited to: Priority Scheduling, Private Tutoring, Advisors, Study Tables, and Enrichment Programs. Mandatory Freshman study table hours help with balancing academics and athletics and the overall transition to college.
Will I have time for other activities?
A lot of your time will be devoted to rowing and academics but our athletes do still have some time for part-time jobs, clubs, and other interests.
What if I am out of shape?
Being in shape will give you an advantage in our sport but we are willing to train and develop anyone who has a great attitude, works hard, and shows athletic potential. Rowing will help you achieve your optimal fitness.
When are tryouts?
Tryouts will start the second week of classes. We do require that you obtain a physical prior to try-outs. Physicals within six months will be accepted with proper documentation. Please Click Here for Physical Form
What are tryouts like?
We start with a week of introductory meetings, followed by a week of learning to row indoors and cross training. We’ll have you do baseline fitness tests, and then we’ll select the team. During those tests we’ll be looking not just for scores, but for effort, attitude/tenacity, and potential.
Who do we race against?
We are the only school in the Mid-American Conference that has a varsity rowing program, so we compete in the Colonial Athletic Association. At our conference championship we race against Northeastern University, Villanova University, Drexel University, the University of Delaware, and the University of Connecticut. Throughout the year we travel to many different places including New Jersey, Virginia, Alabama, Massachusetts, Tennessee and more!
