YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's Rowing and Lightweight Rowing programs returned to their home course at Ford Lake Saturday, Oct. 10, hosting the University of Wisconsin Badgers in a Small Boats Race featuring time trials over 1,900 meters and 2,000-meter finals across pairs and four-plus boat classes.
The highlight of the day came in the Pairs A Final, where Bryah Moriarty (Christchurch, New Zealand/Burnside) and Abbi Lauth (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) powered EMU A across the line first in 8:32.1 — eight seconds clear of Wisconsin Lightweight's top pairs entry (UW LWT A, 8:40.2) and more than 12 seconds ahead of Wisconsin's open entry (UW A, 8:44.6). EMU B rounded out the five-boat A Final in fifth at 8:52.9. The victory on home water was the program's brightest moment of the morning, a sign of where EMU stood racing pairs heading into the fall championship season.
EMU A set the stage in the 1,900-meter pairs time trial, posting the second-fastest time in the field (7:50.9) among 14 boats and trailing only UW LWT A (7:48.0) by 2.9 seconds. EMU B placed fifth overall (8:04.2), while EMU C and EMU D seeded into the C Final with times of 8:27.5 and 8:20.2, respectively.
In the Pairs C Final, EMU C finished second (9:08.4) and EMU D third (9:11.0) behind winner UW LWT C (9:02.1). EMU D edged UW LWT D (9:15.9) by nearly five seconds — a small but encouraging margin for the program's developing boats.
The four-plus events offered a clearer look at the work ahead. In the 1,900-meter four-plus time trial, EMU A placed eighth (7:56.4), EMU B ninth (8:07.0), and EMU LWT 10th (8:24.6) among 10 boats, with all seven Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lightweight entries finishing ahead of EMU's lead four-plus crew. That seeding placed EMU's boats in the B Final, where EMU A finished third (8:38.8) — just 0.7 seconds behind second-place UW D (8:38.1) and 3.2 seconds behind winner UW LWT C (8:35.6). EMU B placed fourth (9:00.7) and EMU LWT fifth (9:23.1). The Four-Plus A Final was swept by Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lightweight, with UW A winning in 8:18.8.
UP NEXT: Eastern Michigan travels to Boston, Mass., for the Head of Charles, Saturday, Oct. 17.
