Terry netted 25 points as Cardinals scored with three seconds left in the extra period

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped a tough overtime battle at Ball State University, 86-84, Tuesday, Feb. 11, inside Worthen Arena as the Cardinals scored with three seconds left  in the extra frame to win the game.

Eastern, which got 25 points from senior Jalen Terry (Flint, Mich./Beecher/Oregon/DePaul), led the overtime period, 84-82, with 39 seconds to go.

Senior Da'Sean Nelson (Toledo, Ohio/Robert S. Rogers/Kilgore College/DePaul) registered 17 points, a career-high eight assists, and six rebounds.

How it Happened
The Cardinals opened the game with a 10-3 spurt, building a first-half lead as large as 26-17 lead before a 9-0 run by the Eagles capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Arne Osojnik (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Dream City Christian) drew Eastern even.

A triple from Terry gave the Eagles a 33-32 advantage but the Cardinals closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 40-33 lead into halftime.

After EMU cut the lead to one early in the second half before BSU pushed its lead back out to eight after scoring seven-straight points.Eastern responded with a 10-1 run to tie it at 52-52 prior to take a 57-55 lead on a three-pointer from Terry.

No team led by more than four the rest of regulation as Henry made a lay-up with 26 seconds left to give Eastern the lead as Ball State split a pair of free throws with 12.9 seconds left to tie the game at 75-75. Eastern's buzzer-beating attempt did not fall to send the game into overtime.

The Eagles led in overtime, 84-82, with 1:19 to go as senior Jalin Billingsley (Cleveland, Ohio Lutheran East Georgetown) split a pair of free throws before the Cardinals tied the game with a pair of free throws with 38 seconds to go.

After EMU turned the ball over via a shot clock violation, Ball State won the game with a dunk with three seconds to play.

» Eastern moved to 11-13 overall and 4-7 in the MAC while Ball State moved to 12-12 overall and 5-6 in conference action.
» Eastern Michigan was 33-of-59 (55.9%) from the floor and 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three-point range while Ball State was 27-of-52 (51.9%) from the field and 7-of-20 (35.0%) from deep.
» Nelson has 990 career points as a Division I player (262 at EMU, 628 at DePaul).
» Nelson, who averages 6.2 fouls drawn per game, drew nine fouls.
» Terry made four three-pointers, marking the eighth time this season he has made at least four three-pointers this season and 17th time in his career.
» Terry, the MAC leader in minutes at 36.8 minutes per game entering Tuesday, played 44 minutes.
» In addition to Terry's 25 points, he added five assists, marking the fourth time an Eagle has recorded at least 25 points and five assists as Henry did so against Detroit Mercy, Nov. 30; at Toledo, Jan. 7; and at Miami, Jan. 28.
» Junior Christian Henry (Chicago, Ill./The Skill Factory/Panola College), who scored 18 points, has 12-consecutive games with at least 10 points.
» Henry registered three steals, marking his third time with a trio of steals this season.
» Eastern posted four blocks, marking 19-straight games with at least one block, the team's longest streak since blocking at least one shot in every game during the 2021-22 season.
» EMU dropped its second overtime game of the season, also falling to Detroit Mercy, Nov. 30.
» Nelson's eight assists are a career high, topping his mark of six set at Ohio, Jan. 21.
» John Shanu II (Houston, Texas/Sam Houston/Old Dominion/UTRGV), who played a season-high 18 minutes, blocked two shots, equaling his season high, set against Akron, Jan. 11.
» Nine different Eagles made at least one field goal for the second time this season as EMU also did so at Miami, Jan. 28.

Historical Notes
» EMU moved to 46-72 against Ball State.
» Nelson is the first Eagle to post 17 points, eight assists, and six rebounds since Ty Toney, Nov. 18, 2015. Toney had 18 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds against Oakland.
» Eastern, which hit five threes against Ball State, has now hit at least one triple in 637-straight games. EMU last failed to score from downtown Jan. 24, 2004, when Miami University held the Eagles to 0-of-7 from behind the arc. The Eagles have converted multiple three-pointers in 59-straight contests, not having done so most recently in a 1-for-15 performance against Akron, Feb.14, 2023.
