YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The NCAA released its annual data on Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Wednesday, Nov. 19, and Eastern Michigan University Athletics was well represented among the nation's best in terms of academic accomplishment. Three teams (men's golf, gymnastics, and women's swimming & diving) posted perfect GSRs. Four additional teams (football, women's basketball, soccer, and tennis) checked in above the 86 percent mark.
Overall, EMU posted a GSR of 85%, which marks the 11th consecutive year the university has recorded a GSR of 80% or higher, representing a remarkable 13-point increase since the 2010-11 academic year.
"Academic success is a cornerstone of Eastern Michigan Athletics and a source of great pride for our department," said Scott Wetherbee, Vice President/Director of Athletics. "Our student-athletes demonstrate exceptional dedication, excelling both in their sports and in the classroom. This success would not be possible without the tireless efforts of our faculty, academic support staff, and coaches, who are deeply committed to helping our student-athletes achieve their academic goals."
The GSR, developed by the NCAA to better reflect the mobility of today's college students, accounts for student-athletes who graduate, transfer to other institutions, or leave their programs for professional opportunities, provided they do so in good academic standing.
For the most recent graduating cohort (2018-19), Eastern Michigan saw standout performances across multiple programs. Men's golf, gymnastics, and women's swimming & diving all achieved perfect GSR scores of 100%. Notably, gymnastics secured its 18th consecutive perfect score, while men's golf posted its fourth straight 100%, and women's swimming & diving reached this milestone for the first time since the 2015-16 report.
Every EMU program posted a GSR of 68% or higher, with four teams improving or maintaining their performance from the previous year. Among the women's programs, all nine recorded scores of at least 83%. On the men's side, golf led the way with a perfect 100%, while football achieved its highest GSR at 86%, reflecting a staggering 37-point improvement from its 2008-09 performance.
The Graduation Success Rate includes data about the most recent six-year graduating class of student-athletes receiving athletic aid and entering college as freshmen in 2018-19. The GSR is designed to show the proportion of student-athletes graduating within a six-year window, accounting for student-athletes who transfer into the institution and leave in good standing.
According to the federal graduation rate, the university's student-athletes outperformed the general student body by 21%, underscoring their commitment to academic excellence.
The federal graduation rate, a narrower metric compared to the GSR, provides a historical comparison between student-athletes and non-athletes. Despite its limitations, the data highlights the extraordinary academic accomplishments of EMU student-athletes over time.
