Eastern reached the MAC Semifinals in 2024, its first tournament appearance since 2018
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team has been selected to finish third in the 2025 Mid-American Conference Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll, the league announced, Jan. 7. The poll is based on a tabulation of votes by the conference's head coaches that ranked the eight programs competing for the MAC title.
The Eagles earned 35 points to rank third overall, which is one spot higher than last season's poll in which EMU tallied 28 points and tied for fourth on the list with Ball State University. This year, the Eagles sit behind predicted champion Miami University, who earned 48 points and six first-place votes, and the University of Toledo, who tallied 38 points and one first-place vote.
The remainder of the voting saw Northern Illinois University earn 30 points to rank fourth, Ball State was fifth with 25 points, the University at Buffalo was sixth with 23 points and one first-place vote, Western Michigan University was seventh with 14 points, and Bowling Green State University was eighth with seven points.
The coaches also voted on who they thought would win the 2025 MAC Tournament that will be played April 24-25 in Toledo, Ohio, with the RedHawks earning five votes. Three other teams each earned one vote, including the Eagles, Buffalo, and Toledo. To reach the tournament, a team must finish in the top four of the final regular season standings. Eastern did so last year as they earned the No. 4 seed and dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to the host Rockets in the semifinals, EMU's first appearance in the tournament since 2018.
The Eagles are set to open their 2025 spring season this week when four players travel down the street to Ann Arbor for the 2025 Michigan Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan. The three-day event will take place Friday-Sunday, Jan. 10-12, on the UM campus.
