YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University E-Club Hall of Famer Harvey Marlatt passed away Thursday, Aug, 8, at the age of 75. Marlatt, a men's basketball student-athlete, was inducted into the E-Club Hall of Fame in 1979. He was also one of 15 student-athletes introduced in 2023 to the inaugural Ring of Honor inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.

The second player in program history to be drafted into the National Basketball Association (NBA), Marlatt was the captain of the 1969-70 team when he earned a spot on the 1970 NAIA All-America Second Team. A four-year standout for EMU, he finished his career with 1,680 points, which ranks eighth in program history. One of the top free-throw shooters at EMU, Marlatt ranks second all-time with 486 career makes from the charity stripe while his 149 makes in 1967-68 ranks ninth all-time and stood as the school record until 1970-71. Marlatt helped Eastern reach the NAIA National Tournament three times and was named the team's MVP in 1968-69. To this day, his 18 assists in a game at Ferris State University, March 4, 1970, stands a single-game record at EMU. Enshrined into the E-Club Hall of Fame in 1979, Marlatt was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the 16th round (224th overall) in the 1970 NBA Draft. He played one season for the Pistons.

Born in Alpena, Mich. on Aug. 26, 1948, to the late Donald and Irene (Wilson) Marlatt, he lived a full and eventful life from beginning to end and touched the lives of many people along the way. He was raised on a small farm in Atlanta, Mich., with his mom and five brothers. His father passed away when he was seven years old. When he was 11, he and his mom moved to Alpena where he graduated from Alpena High School and met the love of his life, Connie Clark. They married in 1968 and moved to Ypsilanti where Harvey attended college at Eastern Michigan. Marlatt went on to become a beloved teacher and coach. He taught at Atlanta Community Schools for 28 years and coached basketball for 20+ years. Harvey was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, and playing tennis. He spent his winters at Sugar Creek in Bradenton, Fla., and he loved to spend time on Marlatt Mountain and be with his family.

Marlatt is survived by his wife, Connie Marlatt of Atlanta; son, Ryan (Kim) Marlatt of Atlanta; daughter, Meegan Feil of Traverse City; grandchildren, Ashley, Jessalyn, Preston, Jayden, Sadie, Greyson, and Alexandra; great-grandson, Hutch; siblings, Donald (Maryann) Marlatt of Atlanta; Ronald Marlatt of Battle Creek; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Irene; and brothers, Raymond, Lawrence, and Rodney Marlatt.

Funeral services for Marlatt will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024, at Atlanta Community Schools, 10500 County Rd 489, Atlanta. Visitation will take place from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service followed by a luncheon at the Atlanta Eagles, 10980 M32, Atlanta. A private interment will take place at Briley Township Cemetery with immediate family only. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Marlatt to the Hospice of Michigan.
