OCALA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming team competed at the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Invitational Championships, held at the F.A.S.T. Facility, Thursday-Saturday, March 14-16. The Eagles finished 27th out of 54 teams.
Meet Notes
» Eastern earned one top-10 and one top-15 relay finish throughout the three-day meet.
» Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Mich./Saline) made the finals cut in the 50y backstroke, placing 13th in the finals.
How it Happened
The Eagles got off to a strong start in the opening finals session, as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Katie Shoen (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy), Marlee Christie (Seminole, Fla./Seminole), Lucy Noble (Flagler Beach, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast), and Russell registered a seventh-place finish out of 38 relay teams in 1:33.86.
Russell went on to secure a 17th-place finish in the 50y backstroke prelims, swimming the distance in 25.84, punching her ticket to the finals, where she shaved .32 seconds off her time, bettering her placing by four, finishing in 13th.
Eastern continued its fast ways in the relay events as Russell, Nina Larosa (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay), Tristen Mina (Santa Clara, Calif./The King's Academy), and Noble teamed up to finish 12th out of 42 in the 200y medley relay in 1:41.73.
Russell had another strong showing in the 100y backstroke, finishing 21st in the prelims session in 55.71, being forced into a one-on-one swim-off, where she would finish second, touching the wall in 56.70.
