Five athletic trainers earn new titles, while three join EMU's staff

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine Department announced the promotions for five current staffers along with the hiring of three new full-time athletic trainers.

Steven Berning has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Trainer/Head Football Athletic Trainer, while Kyle Creasy, Libby Cole, and Luke Klawiter have been promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Trainers. Additionally, Danielle Darroch was elevated to Associate Athletic Trainer.

"I want to thank Scott Wetherbee, Erin Kido, and President Smith for their continued support in the health and well-being of our student-athletes through this reorganization of the sports medicine department," said Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Gretchen Fox. "Steven, Kyle, Libby, Luke, and Danielle all provide a high level of healthcare to their student-athletes and leadership to our program.  These promotions are long overdue for their unwavering dedication to our department and student-athlete well-being."

Berning is in his sixth year at Eastern Michigan after returning to Ypsilanti after serving as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Ferris State for two years. He previously worked at EMU from 2014-16 as a graduate assistant athletic trainer.

Cole is in her second year as an assistant athletic trainer at EMU and works primarily with the lacrosse program that played its inaugural season in 2023. She came to Ypsilanti from Kenyon College, where she has worked since 2017.

Creasy is in his second year with Eastern after joining the department in October of 2021. Previously, he spent three years at Erlanger Health System in Tennessee and well as working at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 2014-18. He works directly with the men's basketball and men's golf teams.

Klawiter was hired in 2020 and serves as the primary athletic trainer for the EMU baseball team. Before he arrived in Ypsilanti, Klawiter spent time at Stanford University and with the Houston Texans.

Darroch enters her sixth year at Eastern Michigan, working with soccer after transitioning from working with football. She previously worked at Northern Illinois University and was an athletic training student for the University of Northern Iowa.

David Galligan (football), Maggie Osowski (women's basketball, women's golf), and Alyssa Volz (football, tennis) all joined the sports medicine staff as full-time athletic trainers ahead of the 2023-24 academic year.

"David, Maggie, and Alyssa all are great young professionals who have seamlessly joined our staff and bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to our sports medicine team," Fox added. "I am excited to watch them grow as healthcare providers and continue to elevate the level of healthcare we provide to our student-athletes."

Galligan joined EMU to work with football following a stint as the athletic trainer at Lawrence Technological University as well as time spent as a seasonal intern for the Detroit Lions. He did his graduate assistantship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his undergrad at the University of Iowa.

Osowski took over a primary care role for women's basketball and golf after earning her bachelor's and master's degrees from EMU in 2023. She also served as a student athletic trainer with Livonia Stevenson High School.

Volz works directly with football and women's tennis after previously serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Toledo. She helped provide care for a pair of Mid-American Conference championship-winning teams during her two-year stay in the Glass City.
