GRANVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swim team tabbed 24 personal-bests as it finished fourth (1,088.5 points) for the second consecutive season at the three-day Denison Invitational, hosted by Denison University, at the Trumbull Aquatic Center from Dec. 5-7.
The meet was won by Emory University, who posted 1,979 points. Denison placed second, scoring 1,645.5, while the University of Indianapolis slotted third (1,478), with the Eagles in fourth, and Washington University-St. Louis in fifth (1,031).
How it Happened – Day Three
Azra Umut (Istanbul, Turkey/Fenerbahce) led the Eagles in the 200-yard backstroke finals. She placed third in a personal-best 2:01.95, a time that stands just .03 seconds away from tying for the 10th-fastest in program history. Eastern Michigan had two others score in the race. Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Mich./Saline) placed sixth in 2:03.13. Siporah Sang (London, Ontario/Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) placed 19th in 2:05.84, as the Eagles scored 67 points.
Abby Szadorski (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) blazed the trail for the Green & White in the 200-yard breaststroke finals, finishing eighth in 2:20.12. Tristen Mina (Santa Clara, Calif./The King's Academy) and Riess Estep (Smyrna, Ga./Whitefield Academy) scored in the B final, placing 12th in 2:22.27 and 14th in 2:23.37, respectively. Hofmeister and Madelyn Sursi (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) also notched points as the flock of Eagles combined for 67 points.
The Eagles came away with 56 points in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The B team, consisting of Lucy Noble (Flagler Beach, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast), Nehir Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/Cevre), Mina, and Umut finished ninth in 3:30.27.
Emma Littrell (Taylor Mill, Ky./St. Henry District) placed third in the 100-yard freestyle finals, tying a personal-best in 51.28. Joining her with points in the race was Marlee Christie (Seminole, Fla./Seminole) (17th – 52.59) and Sophie Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario/Tecumseh Vista Academy) (18th – 52.64). All in all, Eastern secured 55 points.
The 1650-yard freestyle saw Eastern earn 45 points as Morgan Hofmeister (Powell, Ohio/Liberty) led EMU with a seventh-place finish in 17:29.12. She was followed by Ashley George (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha), who placed 11th in 18:00.19.
How it Happened – Day Two
Eastern came away with 114 points in the relay events, placing sixth in both the 200-yard medley relay (Russell, Szadorski, Mina, Littrell) (1:44.20 – 58 points) and 800-yard freestyle relay (Umut, Littrell, Oz, Russell) (7:39.21 – 56 points).
Outside of the relay events, the 400-yard IM finals highlighted the night for the Eagles, as they landed three in the top-10 standings. Oz led the Green and White, placing third in a personal-best 4:28.97. She was followed Szadorski in fourth in 4:29.09 and Hofmeister in ninth in 4:36.22. Eastern had three other swimmers in the finals, as they grabbed 128 points in the event.
Umut spearheaded EMU in the 100-yard backstroke finals, securing 10th place in a personal-best 56.32. She was immediately followed by Russell in 11th in 56.76, while Sang slotted 17th in 58.16. Combined with two other Eastern swimmers in the C final, the Eagles notched 62 points in the event.
Szadorski paced Eastern in the 100-yard breaststroke finals, earning sixth-place in the A final in 1:03.85. Estep was the lone Eagle in the B final, placing 17th in 1:05.91. Two more Eagles swam in the C final and Eastern came away with 49 points.
The trio of Mina, Olivia Clarino (Toronto, Ontario/Lawrence Park Collegiate), and Sang grabbed 47 points in the 100-yard butterfly final. Mina placed 12th in 56.32, followed by Clarino (13th – 56.98), and Sang (18th – 58.95).
Littrell and George scored in the 200-yard freestyle finals as the duo came away with 31 points in total.
After day two, the Eagles remain in fourth place with 729.5 points.
How it Happened- Day One
After the morning prelims session, Eastern began the finals with a strong second-place performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Christie, Littrell, Noble, and Russell shattered the Eagles' previous season-best time (1:36.76) by nearly three seconds, finishing in 1:33.82 and collecting 62 points for EMU.
Umut secured a personal-best swim in the 500-yard freestyle. After setting a PR in the prelims (5:00.95), the newcomer shaved over one second off that time in the final heat, touching the wall in 4:58.49. Following in the A final was Oz, who placed eighth in 5:02.74. Russell earned points in her second event via a 14th-place finish in 5:01.02. Hofmeister also grabbed six points, finishing 22nd in 5:05.58.
Three Eagles earned points in the 200-yard IM. Mina earned 27 with a sixth-place showing, finishing in 2:06.26. Szadorski placed 12th in 2:07.21 for 18 points, while Maren Romine (San Antonio, Texas/International School of the Americas) slotted 26th in 2:11.88 for two points.
Russell earned points yet again, this time in the 50-yard freestyle. She tied for 11th-place in a personal-best 23.64. Littrell followed closely behind, finishing 13th and also swimming a personal-best, competing the race is 23.71. Gatrall joined them with a PR and 19th-place finish in 24.00. Three other Eagles scored in the event as the Green & White totaled 54.5 points in the event.
EMU ended the finals with a seventh-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay for 58 points. Russell, Szadorski, Mina, and Littrell swam a season-best by over two seconds, finishing in 3:47.87.
After day one, Eastern stands in fourth place with 298.5 points.
