Incoming freshmen are highly regarded in their national programs
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Ryan Kucera, head coach of the Eastern Michigan University tennis program, announced today, Dec. 10, the signing of Kenzy Elhamrawy and Sabrina Tolstova to Athletic Financial Aid Agreements to continue their academic and athletic careers with the Eagles. Both players will join the program ahead of the start of the 2025 fall season.
"I am thrilled to have Kenzy and Sabrina join the Eagle tennis family next fall," Kucera said. "Both are accomplished players, both nationally and internationally, and are proven winners with passion for tennis and growing their games. They have both represented their respective countries with pride and know about the importance of playing for a team. Most importantly, we are getting high character, hardworking young women. They will fit in with the special group we have here on and off the court. I can't wait for them to don the Green and White!"
Elhamrawy (Alexandria, Egypt/Girard) has been a mainstay within the Egyptian National Team program since her days as a U11 player and has risen to a 9.0 in the UTR (Universal Tennis Ranking).
"Kenzy's positive attitude and excitement is inspiring," Kucera said. "On the court, she has a huge forehand that is a true weapon and pairs that well with nice touch and racket skills. She has been consistently successful on both the singles and the doubles courts at a high level, and I am excited for her success to grow and continue as an Eagle!"
Elhamrawy qualified for the prestigious Billie Jean Cup U16 Tournament and placed 11th overall, marking the highest finish ever for an Egyptian U16 player. The singles and doubles champion of the U16 Masr Al Ahleya Tournament, the largest tournament in Egypt, she has climbed as high as No. 2 in the Egyptian junior rankings as she has reached the semifinals of ITF singles tournaments four times and the finals of doubles events four times as well.
Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tenerife Tennis Academy (Canary Islands)), a native of Ukraine and a member of its U14 national team, relocated to Tenerife, Canary Islands, in March 2022 and has quickly moved up the Spanish rankings while rating 9.23 in the UTR.
"Sabrina has a wonderful presence and maturity about her," Kucera stated. "She pairs that with a relentless aggressive game. Sabrina possesses all the necessary skills to put opponents under pressure and knows how to win on the big stages. I am excited to see her continue that and further develop that game here at Eastern!"
Tolstova, the former No. 1 U14 player in Ukraine, has been ranked in the top four in Spain (U16) and as high as No. 33 overall in the nation while topping the charts for the Canary Islands. A three-time ITF junior tournament singles champion, Tolstova won the qualifier at the Mutua Madrid U16 event before playing against professionals in the main draw. The U16 and U18 Tenerife and Canary Islands champion, she served as her team's captain and helped them reach the quarterfinals of the Spanish U16 Championships for the first time ever.
The current members of the program are taking part in finals week before enjoying the holiday break. When the Eagles return, several individuals will head down the street to Ann Arbor to compete in the 2025 Michigan Invitational, Jan. 10. The team will play its first two dual matches of the spring season Jan. 18 with Ferris State University coming to town for a doubleheader. The Eagles and Bulldogs will play their first match at 3 p.m. with the second slated to start at 7 p.m. inside the Chippewa Club.
