YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- In the opening segment of Episode 7 of the Eastern Insider Podcast, hosts Tom Helmer and Greg Steiner share a lighthearted conversation about the weekend ahead, featuring a performance by The Temptations during halftime.
The duo discusses their nostalgic excitement for the event and muses over classic movies, revealing that Greg has missed several iconic films from the 80s, such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club. This leads to a humorous back-and-forth where Tom jokes about giving Greg a "movie education" to catch up on cultural staples. They also touch on upcoming football games, discussing the significance of the next two matchups, particularly as the team aims to become bowl-eligible. They highlight the EMU Eagles' strong performances, with quarterback Cole Snyder leading a balanced offense.
Finally, they celebrate the recent victories in soccer and volleyball, signaling the EMU teams' competitive momentum, while humorously referencing Greg's unfamiliarity with pop culture throughout the chat.
Segment 1 - Delbert Mimms III
Delbert Mimms III has made his mark in college football through perseverance, versatility, and a drive for greatness. The Indianapolis native began his journey at North Carolina State, where he impressed on special teams, once leading the ACC in plays. Despite a crowded running back room, Mimms found his role as a dependable short-yardage back but craved more. Wanting to be an every-down player, he transferred to Eastern Michigan, seeking the opportunity to fully showcase his skills.
"I didn't want to just be the third-and-one or goal-line back," Mims explained. "I wanted to take on 60-yard runs."
At EMU, Mimms found his groove. He lit up the field in the game against Kent State with 145 rushing yards and multiple touchdowns, crediting his success to his teammates, especially the offensive line.
In the locker room, Mimms has earned the nickname "Pops" due to his leadership and experience, a role he embraces at 23, though he jokes about still feeling young. With Cole Snyder's steady leadership at quarterback, Mimms is excited for what's ahead, noting the team's determination to dominate their conference.
Having navigated the fast pace of Power Five football and the intensity of the transfer portal, Mims feels no pressure, only confidence. "I love pressure. I work better under it," he said. Now settled in Ypsilanti, he's ready to lead Eastern Michigan to new heights—on his terms.
Segment 2 - Chris Creighton
Head Coach Chris Creighton is preparing Eastern Michigan for a pivotal matchup against the Miami RedHawks this weekend, following a well-timed bye week. Sitting at 4-1, Creighton emphasized the importance of rest and preparation after a true bye, the team's first since 2019. "We wanted our guys to rest and rehab, but also keep the rhythm going," he said.
Looking back on their last game, a dominant 52-33 victory over Kent State, Creighton credited his defense for creating opportunities with three key turnovers in the third quarter. These plays allowed the offense to capitalize with short fields, which Creighton noted as the turning point in the game.
Ahead of facing Miami, the reigning MAC champions, Creighton highlighted the challenge of stopping experienced quarterback Brett Gabbert. "He's really good, like having a coach on the field. It's going to be tough to slow him down," Creighton said. The game marks a crucial test for EMU as they aim for a fifth win and inch closer to bowl eligibility.
Creighton also spoke about the resilience of his offensive line, which has been reshuffled due to injuries. Despite the challenges, the unit continues to perform, with key contributions from Blake Bustard, Carson Lee, and others.
With the excitement of the Temptations performing at halftime and Michigan's major teams on bye, Creighton hopes for strong fan support at the Factory. "It's a great opportunity for people to come out and see us play," he urged.
