Eagles combined to play 38 matches over three days at Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team completed play at the 2024 Hoosier Classic Sunday, Oct. 6, with the Eagles combining to play in 38 matches over three days at the event held on the Indiana University Varsity Tennis Courts in Bloomington, Ind., Oct. 4-6. Eastern sent eight players to compete in singles and doubles action with Regina Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) finishing a team-best fourth in Flight 6 singles while the pair of Kseniia Saenko (Voronezh, Russia/Gymnasium 2) and Daniella Shved (Holon, Israel/Ort Holon) combined to place fifth in doubles Flight 1.
"I am really proud of our growth and determination throughout this tournament," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "The first two days, result wise, were frustrating because we were in so many matches and did not have them go our way. We didn't feel like we competed in the big moments to the level we are capable. But we made it a priority and each day we improved, finishing strong on Day 3. We had a ton of competitive matches against top ranked opponents, and we learned a lot heading into regionals."
In singles play, Mendez was the top finisher as she placed fourth in Flight 6 thanks to capturing a victory in the opening round with her 7-5, 6-0 straight-sets win over Indiana's Chase Boyer. Four individuals won their final matches of the tournament, including Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czechia/Gymnázium Jana Blahoslava) in fifth place in Flight 4; and the trio of Shved (Flight 1), Saenko (Flight 2), and Viki Hazmukova (Skvorec, Czechia/Skoly Brezova)(Flight 5) all placing seventh. The matches for Hazmukova marked her debut in singles play as a collegiate competitor.
In doubles play, Saenko and Shved rebounded from an opening-round loss to win back-to-back matches and finish fifth. They first defeated the University of North Texas team of Stadfany Nformi and Gianna Pielet, 6-4, before downing the University of Memphis team of Rebecca Frant and Clemence Thouard, 6-3. The team of Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland/Sopocka (Sopot) Tennis Academy/Wayne State) and Mendez, playing in doubles Flight 3, closed out their tournament with a 6-3 win over fellow Mid-American Conference foe Irmak Budak and Sydney Paradise of Northern Illinois University, 6-3, to place seventh overall.
Overall, in the tournament, the Eagles battled throughout with 10 singles matches going to three sets, including all three matches Shved played and two of three by Lara Diaz Zayas (Mar de Ajo, Argentina/SEADEA).
