Dan McLean (Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director/General Manager for Golf), Gretchen Fox (Senior Associate Athletics Director for Health and Well-Being), Clifford Sims (Senior Associate Athletics Director of Facilities, Operations, and Capital Projects), and Greg Steiner (Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs) have each been promoted.
"We are thrilled to promote these exceptional leaders who have each demonstrated unwavering dedication to Eastern Michigan Athletics," said Wetherbee. Their promotions reflect their hard work and our belief in their continued impact. I look forward to seeing how their leadership will shape the future of EMU Athletics."
Dan McLean - Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director/General Manager for Golf
McLean, who has been a cornerstone of the EMU Athletics Department since 2014, has been promoted to Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director/General Manager for Golf. McLean has played a pivotal role in advancing EMU Athletics, especially in the area of development. His leadership was instrumental in securing over $41 million in support of Eastern Michigan. McLean's efforts contributed to the historic $8.2 million donation that funded the GameAbove Golf Performance Center.
In his new role, McLean will continue to oversee fundraising and operational aspects of EMU's golf programs, which recently saw a $6.5 million commitment from GameAbove, as well as the addition of new head coaches for both the men's and women's golf teams.
"I am honored to step into the role of Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director/General Manager for Golf," said McLean. "EMU has been the most significant part of my professional journey. I am excited to continue working with our talented coaches, student-athletes, and dedicated supporters to elevate our golf programs. Thank you to GameAbove for sharing a national championship vision and platform for that quest."
Gretchen Fox - Senior Associate Athletics Director for Health and Well-Being
Now in her sixth year with EMU, Fox has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Health and Well-Being. Fox will expand her responsibilities to include overseeing the health and sports performance programs for all of EMU's 500+ student-athletes. In addition to managing athletic training, counseling, and nutrition services, Fox will serve as the sports administrator for the women's rowing team. Additionally, she will serve as EMU's designated NCAA Athletics Healthcare Administrator.
Fox has been an essential part of EMU Athletics since joining in 2018 as Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, where she managed day-to-day sports medicine operations and led a team of 12 athletic trainers.
"I want to thank Scott Wetherbee, Erin Kido, and President James Smith for their continued support in the health and well-being of our student-athletes, added Fox. "I am honored and grateful to oversee the health and well-being of EMU student-athletes and lead this group of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. I'm excited to take on this new challenge to ensure we meet current NCAA best practices while continuing to provide the highest level of holistic healthcare to our student-athletes."
Clifford Sims - Senior Associate Athletics Director of Facilities, Operations, and Capital Projects
Sims, in his third year at EMU, has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director of Facilities, Operations, and Capital Projects. Sims will oversee the management of all athletic facilities and game day operations for EMU's home athletic events, while also directing external events to generate revenue. He will also serve as the sports administrator for women's soccer, cross country, and track & field.
Since joining EMU in 2021, Sims has been a driving force in enhancing the operations and capital projects that support the university's athletics programs.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to move into the new role as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Facilities, Operations and Capital Projects," Sims said. "I want to thank Scott Wetherbee, Erin Kido and the entire EMU family for their tremendous support. Together, we've accomplished many exciting renovations and upgrades to our facilities that our coaches, staff and student-athletes can be proud of. I'm excited to have the chance to continue working alongside great people as we push the limits within EMU Athletics."
Greg Steiner - Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs
Steiner, a long-standing member of the EMU Athletics Department, has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs. Steiner has been with EMU for 24 years, most recently serving as Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations. In his new role, he will provide strategic leadership in media relations, marketing, sponsorships, and other revenue-generating functions along with acting as the sports administrator for baseball. Additionally, Steiner will continue as the primary media contact for football and co-host of the Eastern Insider podcast.
To support EMU's expanding video production efforts, an Assistant Athletics Director for Broadcast Production will be added to manage the EMU-ESPN initiative. This program provides students with hands-on experience in sports broadcasting, producing live content for ESPN+.
Steiner's promotion comes as EMU continues to grow its video production capabilities, highlighted by a state-of-the-art broadcast control room and the recent addition of a broadcast studio. These efforts have positioned EMU as a leader in the Mid-American Conference, being the only school to offer in-studio halftime reports during basketball broadcasts.
"I am incredibly grateful to the entire administration for their trust and confidence in me," added Steiner. "EMU has been my home since the fall of 1999 when I arrived as a freshman on campus and I'm honored to continue serving this amazing community. I look forward to working alongside our talented external staff to elevate EMU Athletics further. This department has always been driven by innovation and collaboration, and I'm excited to help us reach even greater heights in the years ahead."
