Junior is the first Eagle to advance to the Round of 32 since 2015
COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team took part in the 2024 ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 10-12, with Daniella Shved leading the charge as she advanced to the second round of the singles main draw. Overall, three Eagles were in action in the tournament hosted by Ohio State University.
Shved (Holon, Israel/Ort Holon) was the lone player from Eastern to compete in the main draw and she fared well as she won her opening round match, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, over Eleanor Nobbs of DePaul University. Shved fell in her next match as she dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Emily Sartz-Lunde of the University of Michigan, the reigning U.S. Junior Open doubles champion. Shved, who was one of only two players from non-power conference schools to reach the Round of 32, was the first Eagle to reach the Round of 32 since Klara Supejova won twice to reach the Round of 16 at the 2015 event.
Prior to the main draw, two other Eagles competed in the qualifying tournament where two victories would earn a berth into the main draw. Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czechia/Gymnázium Jana Blahoslava) went 1-1 in her matches as she opened the tournament with 6-2, 6-1 defeat of fellow Mid-American Conference opponent Brynn Chaffee of Bowling Green State University before falling to Nau Nishino of Ohio State, the No. 9-16 seed, 6-3, 6-0.
Freshman Iva Daneva (Kavadarci, North Macadonia/DSU Sportska Akademija) picked up a win in her first regional tournament as the rookie scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over Northern Illinois University's Nataly Ninova Mirslavova. Daneva fell in her second match as she dropped a 6-1, 6-1 score to third-seeded Carrie Bechman of the University of Notre Dame.
Brichackova and Daneva joined forces to compete in the doubles tournament and posted a 1-1 record as well. In the opening round, the duo defeated the team of Danielle Badman and Anna Belogliadova of Bradley University, 8-6. In the second round, the EMU duo fell to sixth-seeded Shelly Bereznyak and Nishino of Ohio State, 8-3. The first-round win for Brichackova marks the second year in a row she has won a doubles match at the ITA event after she and teammate Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India/Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics) reached the second round at the 2023 event in East Lansing, Mich.
