YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — During the 2022-23 academic year, all 19 Eastern Michigan University teams continued the tradition of working closely with the campus and local community totaling 5,694 hours of community service. Additional citizenship accomplishments are listed below.

Citizenship
  • Hired Sara Tisdale to not only coach lacrosse but to also work closely with the University's Interim Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to coordinate Eastern Athletics DEI programming, as we continue building a diverse and inclusive environment for all our student-athletes.
  • Created an EMU Athletics DEI Committee with numerous student-athletes, coaches, and staff involved. The committee meets bi-weekly to build programming and engagement opportunities.
  • EMU Athletics provided strong involvement and participation in the MAC's DEI Education series. EMU had 200 total sessions attending with a MAC-best 37 attending two sessions and eight earning all three certifications.
  • Held a CONEsent event for all student-athletes with the goals of educating our student-athletes on what consent is and what it is not, what resources are available on campus, providing a supportive and engaging environment, and promoting the conversation of consent in our day-to-day lives. This was done as a cooperative effort between EMU Athletics DEIB and the EMU Women's Resource Center. A total of 351 student-athletes attended the event with gymnastics and women's tennis earning a 100% participation rate.
  • Student-Athlete Appreciation Day picnic - gathering coaches, staff, and student-athletes to celebrate their hard work in their sport and in the classroom
  • Hosted a Juneteenth Celebration that was open to the campus and surrounding community
  • Feminine hygiene products in all athletic restrooms & locker rooms. This is a cooperative effort with the main campus
  • EMU student-athletes attended the Black Student Athlete Summit in Los Angeles where they participated in numerous events to support their student-athlete experience.  "Major topics of discussion will cover the mental health of coaches, the experiences of Black Student-Athletes at elite institutions, the power of faith, community activism, and how Black Student-Athletes can own, buy, and sell real estate in their own communities."
  • EMU student-athletes created the Black Student-Athlete Association that supports the black student-athlete experience on our campus.  "The Black Student Athlete Association provides a safe space and common ground for Black student-athletes to find support and people who understand what they are going through in life, class, and their sport."
  • EMU SASS organized resume reviews every third Friday of the month. Student-athletes had the opportunity to meet with a Career Coach from the University's UACDC to discuss ways to strengthen their resumes. Career Coaches assisted student-athletes in highlighting their marketable skills as part of their student-athlete experience.
  •  EMU SAAC encouraged and promoted Diversity and Inclusion Week on campus by planning activities to engage students during the week-long initiative.
  • The football team welcomed the return of one of its best and most impactful traditions, as it hosted Victory Day inside "The Factory" at Rynearson Stadium. The eighth installment of Victory Day at EMU, the event welcomed cognitive and physically impaired community members to take part in a day of football with Eastern Michigan players, coaches, and staff.
  • The EMU lacrosse team helped a mother of three who was stranded in the airport after losing her cell phone. More on the story can be read at https://bit.ly/3KhGRHh
