2022-23 Year In Review: Academics

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — For the 27th consecutive semester, Eastern Michigan University student-athletes posted an average term GPA above 3.0. Additional academic accomplishments throughout the 2022-23 academic year are listed below.

Academics

The men's golf, women's golf, and women's tennis teams posted perfect 1,000 single-year rates in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) released by the NCAA.
A total of six teams (men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, women's soccer, women's tennis, and volleyball) had perfect APR single-year scores of 1,000.
With 455 student-athletes, Eastern Michigan recorded a 3.354 winter semester GPA. The department's term GPA is the best since records began being tracked in the fall of 1999 with the figure only bettered in the winter semester of 2020 when students were able to exercise the pass/fail option.
EMU also notched the department's all-time best cumulative GPA at 3.382, 0.013 ahead of the previous best of 3.369 in winter 2021.
Overall, 78 percent (354) of EMU student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA-or-higher for the semester and all of EMU's teams had term GPAs of 3.0-or-higher.
Soccer, swimming & diving, and volleyball each surpassed their previous semester GPA standards, while men's cross country and women's track & field notched their second-best marks.
For MAC honors, EMU racked up 160 Academic All-MAC awards.
A total of 14 EMU standouts were selected for the prestigious weekly MAC Scholar-Athlete Award. Overall, EMU had six more winners than the next best institutions. Eastern Michigan student-athletes accounted for 21% of the total winners for the year.
In total, 38 EMU student-athletes earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators (CSC).
Mair Edwards, a member of the women's track and field program, was named a member of the 2023 Collegiate Sports Communicators Academic All-America Third Team. Historically, Edwards is the 30th different Eastern student-athlete and 13th woman to earn Academic All-America accolades from CSC. The sixth different track & field/cross country runner to earn the honor and the third woman, Edwards is the first track & field/cross country recipient from Eastern since 2018.
Five football players have been named to the 2023 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society. The society is composed of college football players from all divisions who maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA-or-better throughout their college career. The five selections for the Eagles rank second in the Mid-American Conference.
Wide receiver Dylan Drummond was named as one of 156 semifinalists for the 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award.
The gymnastics program had 21 student-athletes earn Scholastic All-American status by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA). The team ranked ninth in the country out of the participating 76 institutions with a collective grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.7380. Only one Mid-American Conference program ranked higher, with Northern Illinois coming in one spot above the Eagles in eighth (3.7527).
The volleyball program received its 18th-consecutive recognition by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)
Luke Russo of the baseball program and Chevonne Wheeler of the women's track & field program were announced as the school's recipients of the 2023 MAC Medal of Excellence Award.
