Incoming freshman brings outside shooting to the program
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Arne Osojnik (Ljubljana, Slovenia-Dream City Christian (Ariz.)), a 6-foot-6 guard, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic career with the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program, Head Coach Stan Heath announced today, April 28.
"He is a true freshman coming that has good size at 6-foot-6 with good guard skills," Heath said of the newest Eagle. "The thing that is really attractive about him is his ability to shoot. He is a terrific shooter and that is an area we really wanted to improve. His all-around game also is very solid. He is from Slovenia and he plays a lot older than what a true freshman typically plays. We are very excited to have him and I feel he can contribute right away for us."
Born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Osojnik (pronounced AR-nuh oh-SOJ-nick) twice competed on his nation's U18 national team at the European Championships, including last summer where he helped his team a fourth-place finish in the 2022 Euro Championship A tournament. The team's top rebounder in the tournament, Osojnik finished the seven-game event averaging 9.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 2.1 steals as Slovenia posted a 5-3 overall record. In the event, he posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds against the Czech Republic and added a tournament-high 18 points in an 85-83 win over Croatia.
Osojnik also helped Slovenia to a 5-0 record at the 2021 U18 Euro Championships, averaging 7.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest. All told in 12 games, he averaged 7.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in international play for Slovenia.
The 2022-23 season saw Osojnik play for Head Coach Kyle Weaver at Dream City Christian High School in Glendale, Ariz., as a member of its National program. His team posted a 33-5 record on the year against many of the top teams in the nation and finished the campaign ranked No. 7 in the final MaxPreps Top 25 rankings. His team also reached the championship game of the Grind Session World Championship Tournament where they took runner-up honors. A solid defender that was tasked with guarding the opponent's top scorer, Osojnik averaged 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game. Additionally, he connected on 46 percent of his three-point shots, averaging 3.2 made triples per contest.
Osojnik is the second newcomer added to the Eagles' program this offseason, joining Cyril Martynov (Barrie, Ontario-Lawrenceville (N.J.)-Georgia Tech), a 7-foot center who played the 2022-23 season with Georgia Tech. Martynov will have three years of eligibility with the Eagles.
