ROCK HILL, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team fought valiantly, but ultimately came up just short in its first-ever road game, falling 16-11 to Winthrop University today, March 3, in Rock Hill, S.C.

A quartet of Eagles scored multiple goals in the game as Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md.-Patuxent), Sydney Lawrence (Wylie, Texas-Plano Senior-Oregon), Tracy Grollman (Annapolis, Md.-Annapolis Area Christian School), and Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md.-Northern) each found the net twice. All told, seven different Eagles combined to score a season-best 11 goals for Eastern (0-2, 0-0 MAC), while the EMU defense held Winthrop (2-2, 0-0 Big South) to 16 goals, the best defensive effort for the Eagles this season.

How It Happened
After solid defensive play for both teams to start the contest, it was Winthrop's offense who got on the board first, with 9:33 remaining in the opening quarter. Down 2-0 with just over four minutes left in the opening stanza, it was Abby Alderman who netted EMU's first goal. She was assisted by Sydney Lawrence.

After just four goals total were exchanged in the opening quarter, the offenses for both squads picked up their efficiency in the second 15 minutes of play. Winthrop put six more goals on the scoreboard, while Eastern added four of its own to enter halftime down four, 9-5. After picking up an assist in the first quarter, it was Lawrence who scored the second goal of the day, and first of the second quarter, for the Green and White.

After a one-goal third, Eastern's scoring unit elevated its play yet again in the fourth quarter, scoring a game-high five single-period goals en route to outpacing Winthrop 5-3 in the quarter. Despite the late-game push by the Eagles, they were unable to complete the comeback, falling 16-11, but scoring 10+ goals in a game for the first time in program history.

Game Notes
» Freshman Abby Alderman netted in the first goal in program history in the first quarter (7:55) against Niagara, Feb. 16. The rookie put her name on the "firsts" list once more after she connected on a shot in the first quarter (4:11) against Winthrop, March 3, with help from Lawrence, to mark the first goal and assist in a road game in program history. Additionally, Abby Alderman's goal in the fourth minute of the opening stanza came three minutes sooner than her first goal in the inaugural game, Feb. 16.
» Rookie Skylar Hilmer (San Diego, Calif.-Patrick Henry) scored a women-up goal late in the fourth quarter to secure the program's first woman-up road goal in history. The goal mark's the second woman-up goal of the season after Ab. Alderman's in the 7:55 minute of the first game, Feb. 16.
» Last game, the Eagles' offense produced eight shots against the Purple Eagles, Feb. 16, with eight being on frame. In today's contest, the team topped its season-high with 28 shots, 23 of which were on goal. Additionally, the 11 made goals topped last game's four.
» EMU's goalies faced 36 Winthrop shots, 24 of which were on frame with eight being saved. Starter Giuliana Ditsky (Wyomissing, Pa.-Berks Catholic) faced the first 14 shots on frame, saving three, while Hannah Bargeron (Farmington, Utah-Viewmont-Westminister (UT)) saw the last 10 Winthrop chances, saving five and collecting a season-high after her four stops against Niagara, Feb. 16.
» Eastern Michigan's ground ball count increased from seven against Niagara, Feb. 16 to 18 against Winthrop, March 3. Leading the Green and White with four in today's contest was Ditsky who topped her single ground ball recorded against Niagara, Feb. 16.
» Eastern's draw control performance improved from last game, earning 20 against Winthrop's 11 to mark its first time defeating an opponent in the draw control battle. In its first outing, EMU lost the battle 8-16, Feb. 16. Leading the Green and White on the day was Lawrence, who collected nine draw controls, topping her career-high one set in two contests as a Duck.
» The Eagles also improved on their free-position attempts as they produced 10 free-position shots compared to Winthrop's nine. Additionally, five of the 10 EMU free-position shots resulted in a goal with Lawrence's first of two going in at the 11:57 mark of the second quarter and listing as the program's first free-position made goal. In its inaugural game, Feb. 16, the team earned two free-position attempts going 0-2 in those shots.
» Two Eagles earned their first ever collegiate starts in Hilmer and Samantha Borgert (Fishers, Ind.-Hamilton Southeast), while both Olivia Halverson (Hillsborough, N.J.-Hillsborough) and Gretchen McCann (Savage, Minn.-Prior Lake) debuted in their first game.
» The team produced 11 goals in the setback topping their previous four set against Niagara, Feb. 16. The 11 mark as the first time EMU has hit the double-digit plateau in terms of scoring.
» Seven members of the team found the back of the cage in the contest, with four doing it twice. It marked the first time the Eagles have produced a player with multiple goals in a single game, and set as a team high with four.
» With their goals against Winthrop, Ab. Alderman, Blackwell, and Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md.-St. Mary's Ryken College) have recorded a single goal in consecutive contests after scoring one each against Niagara, Feb. 16.
» Scoring their first collegiate goals in the contest was Grollman, who went 2-of-2, Hilmer with one, and Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin-Scioto) with one as well.
