Blackwell (defense) and Lawrence (offense) earn the first weekly honors in program history
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference announced its weekly lacrosse honors, March 28, with Eastern Michigan University sweeping the accolades while earning the first player of the week honors in program history. Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md.-Northern) was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week while Sydney Lawrence (Wylie, Texas-Plano Senior-Oregon) was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week following their impressive performances last week.
"Mac and Syd have put in an incredible amount of work, both on and off the field, and this recognition reflects their efforts," Head Coach Sara Tisdale said. "Their performances last week in our final two non-conference games helped prepare them to go into MAC play with confidence."
Blackwell had a strong showing in both games last week as she averaged 7.5 draw controls per game, including a program-record 10 wins against Butler University, March 26, which doubled her previous career high of five that she recorded three times previously this year, including in the first game of the week against Marquette, March 24. Blackwell, who caused one turnover and collected three ground balls, averaged 3.0 points and 3.0 goals in the two games as she tallied a career-high-tying four goals against BU after scoring twice against the Golden Eagles.
Lawrence tallied six goals, two assists, and eight points over her two games played, including a career game at Butler where she notched seven points on five goals and two assists to set school records for both points and goals in a game. Additionally, her point total ties for the second-most in a game by a MAC player this year while her five goals ranked tied for seventh. Against BU, Lawrence opened the game scoring three goals in a row, all of which came within the first three minutes of play, and finished with five, three of which came on free-position shots, marking the first free-position hat trick in program history. Lawrence also recorded her 14th caused turnover of the season, the most in the MAC, to up her season average to 1.75 per game, which also leads the league.
Up Next
The Eagles return to action Saturday, April 1, when they travel to Titan Field in Detroit to face the University of Detroit Mercy. The game is scheduled to start at noon and will be the inaugural MAC game for the Eagles.
