YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Meagan Lukowski (Bay City, Mich.-Bay City Western)
scored the first two goals of her career, both Sarah Ash (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) and Maddie O'Farrell (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Catholic) each added scores, and Rebecca Przybylo (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) anchored the defense to its first shutout of the season to lead the Eastern Michigan University soccer program to a convincing 4-0 victory on the road at Illinois State University Sunday at Adelaide Street Field in Normal, Ill. The Eagles, coming off a season-opening draw with Western Illinois University Thursday afternoon, now stand 1-0-1 on the year, their best start since posting a similar record in 2019, while the Redbirds fell to 0-2-0 (0-0-0 MVC).

How It Happened
44' - Both teams looked to gain the upper hand throughout the opening half in a match that looked to be heading to a scoreless 45 minutes of play. But, with under 90 seconds remaining in the stanza, the Eagles opened the scoring as Ash rose above the defense in the box and headed home a pass from Kylie Frantz (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), who took the corner kick for EMU.
71' - After the hosts had several solid chances to equalize, including an attempt in the 68'  that Przybylo saved off the line after a deflection off the crossbar, the Eagles got on the board for the second time as Lukowski netted her first. On the play, the Redbirds were trying to clear their defensive zone when Tiffanie Hollingsworth (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon East) intercepted a long pass and carried the ball to the left side of the box where she fed a pass to O'Farrell just inside the box. O'Farrell immediately played the ball to Lukowski at the top of the six-yard box where she gathered the pass, turned, and fired a shot low and into the goal to double EMU's advantage.
73' - Just over two minutes later, the Eagles were back at it again, this time with Lukowski setting up O'Farrell. The play began with Lukowski stepping in front of a back pass toward the ISU goalkeeper just inside the box. Lukowski stopped the ball in place with O'Farrell running on to it and chipping her shot over the keeper to make it 3-0.
86' - The final goal of the game also was the second of the day for Lukowski. Freshman Arielle Fink (Bradford, Ontario-Holy Trinity Catholic) collected a loose ball on the right side and carried toward the box where she fed a pass to Lukowski, who collected, turned, and again found an opening to shoot the ball past the keeper for the final 4-0 score line.

Game Notes
» Eastern moves to 1-0-1 on the year, its best start since also opening at 1-0-1 in both 2019 and 2017
» The Eagles have tallied six goals in the opening two matches, marking the first time they have scored multiple goals in back-to-back games since March 14 (3-0 at Northern Illinois) and March 18 (3-2 win at home over Toledo) in 2021 as part of the 2020 season
» Today's margin of victory (4) is largest for the Eagles since Sept. 22, 2013, when they defeated visiting Indiana State, 4-0
» The 4-0 win also is the largest road victory for the Eagles since Sept. 7, 2008, when they posted a 4-0 win at Eastern Illinois
» As a team, the Eagle recorded four goals and five assists for 13 total points. From a historical standpoint, the four goals ties for the 15th-most in a single match, the five assists rank tied for 11th, and the 13 points rank tied for 16th
» Six different Eagles recorded at least one point in the game, including three with multiple points, including Ash (2), Lukowski (5), and O'Farrell (3)
» Ash's goal stands as her second career game-winning goal (at Northern Illinois, 10/3/21) with the time of the goal (43:39) standing as the 11th-latest first-half goal scored in program history
» Lukowski not only scored her first collegiate goal, but she added herself to a pair of all-time, single-match charts in EMU history, including becoming the 29th player to record two goals in a match and tied for ninth for points in a match with five (2g-1a)
» The last time an EMU player tallied multiple goals in a game came March 18, 2021, when Sabrina McNeill netted two against Toledo
» Lukowski is the first Eastern player to record five points in a game since Oct. 27, 2013, when Angela Vultaggio accomplished the same feat against Akron
» Przybylo's five saves, accompanied by the play of the defense in front of her, produced the team's first shutout since a 0-0 draw with Ball State (away) last year (Sept. 23, 2021) and the team's first shutout victory since April 1, 2021, a 1-0 road win at Central Michigan
» Three more rookies made their collegiate debuts today with Emily Iafrate (Innisfil, Ontario-Banting Memorial), Secora Johnson (Galena, Ohio-Olentangy Orange), and Fink each logging minutes while Frantz made her season debut as well

» Eastern is now 246-223-61 all-tie, needing just four more wins to reach the 250-win milestone
» With four goals today, the Eagles have now scored 798 all-time goals, just two shy of the 800-goal milestone
» The win over Illinois State snaps a six-match winless slide in the series (0-4-2) with the last winning coming Aug. 27, 2010, a 1-0 decision in Normal, Ill.
» Today's results marks the second match in a row in the series that the score ended 4-0 with ISU winning last year
» Eastern is now 11-12-5 all-time in its first road match of the year and snaps a two-match losing skid in the process.
