The Eagles finish 15-16 overall, and 3-7 in the MAC
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team ended the season at Ball State University Sunday, April 24, falling 4-3. The Eagles finished the 2022 Spring Season 15-16 overall, and 3-7 in Mid-American Conference play.
"Despite being shorthanded, Ball State played with absolute determination knowing a MAC champion was on the line," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We just couldn't quite match their intensity all the way from start to finish. You have to give them a ton of credit. I also have to praise the effort our team gave. The match literally came down to the last few points and easily could have gone either way. We have a lot of positives to take away from our growth this season and to build on for next year."
How It Happened
Redshirt seniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay, City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) earned the first win of the day in doubles, topping their opponents, 6-4, in the two spot. Clinching the doubles point for Eastern were redshirt senior Vasavi Ganesan (Chennai, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education). The pair defeated their No. 3 opponent, 6-4, and put the Eagles up, 1-0.
In singles play, Ganesan bested her opponent at No. 5, 6-4, 6-2. Down 3-2, redshirt junior Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-l'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) earned a win at No. 4 for EMU, 6-3, 7-5. Ultimately, the Eagles were unable to finish the job as freshman Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahslava) lost a tough three-set match, 6-4, 0-6, 6-7 (5).
