DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Emoni Bates (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsi Prep-Memphis) made his Eagles debut and totaled 30 points, but the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team fell to the No. 22 University of Michigan Wolverines, 88-83, in non-conference action at Little Caesars Arena Friday, Nov. 11.
 
The Eagles (1-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Bates. Noah Farrakhan (Hillside, N.J.-The Patrick School-East Carolina) added 19 points and six rebounds and Tyson Acuff (Detroit, Mich.-Cass Tech-Duquesne) helped out with 10 points and four assists.
 
How It Happened
After falling behind, 36-35, Eastern Michigan went on a 5-0 run with 2:17 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Bates, to take a 40-36 lead. The Eagles then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 45-42 advantage.
 
Eastern Michigan took advantage of three offensive rebounds to score seven second-chance points out of 45 total in the period. Michigan then erased the Eastern Michigan lead in the game's final quarter for an 88-83 comeback victory.
 
Game Notes
» With the loss, Eastern falls to 1-1 on the year while Michigan improved to 2-0.
» With the loss, the Eagles fall to 0-2 in neutral site games against the Wolverines. The previous meeting was also played in Detroit at the University of Detroit Mercy, Dec. 28, 1974, a 71-56 win for UM.
» Bates finished his debut with 30 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three, while chipping in five boards in 34 minutes of play. For his collegiate career (18 games at Memphis and one with Eastern), Bates bettered his previous career highs in four categories after scoring 17 points in his college debut against Tennessee Tech University, Nov. 9, 2021, sixth made baskets against Saint Louis University, Nov. 19, 2021; 12 shot attempts at the University of Central Florida, Jan. 12, 2022; and 31 minutes played against Western Kentucky University, Nov. 21, 2021.
» Bates' 30-point performance was the first for the Eagles since last season when Farrakhan tallied 31 against Northern Illinois University Feb. 22, 2022. That night, Farrakhan hit 11 shots including three treys and six free throws.
» Farrakhan finished his night with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting while also leading the team in rebounding with six boards. Farrakhan also handed out three assists, the second-most on the team, and recorded one steal.
» Acuff had an improved outing over his debut Nov. 7, against Wayne State as the sophomore tallied 10 points to reach double digits for the eighth time in his career and the first time since scoring 15 for Duquesne University March, 2, 2022, against George Washington University. Acuff finished the night with five rebounds, giving him nine in his first two games with the Eagles, as he also led the team with four assists on the night, surpassing his career-best three recorded last year against the University of Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, March 9, 2022.
 
Historical Notes
» Bates' 12 made buckets tied for the second-most by a collegiate player in Little Caesars Arena, which was the facility record before UM's Hunter Dickinson went 13-of-17 tonight. The duo are two of only five players to have scored 30 or more in a game at LCA and the first two since the 2018 Horizon League Tournament.
» Legend Geeter (River Rouge, Mich.-River Rouge-Providence) recorded three steals in the game to tie for the third-most in a game at LCA. Those were the first steals of collegiate career as well.
» Tonight's loss is the 22nd in a row for the Eagles against a nationally ranked opponent. The last time Eastern downed a ranked for was Dec. 17, 1997, an 89-83 overtime win at then-No. 21 Michigan.
» Eastern fell to 3-28 all-time against its Washtenaw County foe with the loss tonight.
» The Eagles have now dropped nine in a row against members of the Big Ten Conference. The last time Eastern won a game against the league was Dec. 9, 2014, a 45-42 victory at Michigan.
 
Up Next
The Eagles will open play in the 2022 Cancun Challenge with a trip to Peoria, Ill., Tuesday, Nov. 15, where they will face the Bradley University Braves. The game is slated to tip at 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET) inside Carver Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
