Erin Kido and Andy Rowdon have been promoted to Deputy Athletic Directors
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University athletics senior staff members Erin Kido and Andy Rowdon have both been promoted to deputy athletic directors, Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee announced today, Oct. 6. Kido will serve as the Deputy Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Rowdon as the Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations.
"Erin and Andy have been instrumental to our success since my arrival here at Eastern Michigan," said Wetherbee. "Not only have they served as mentors to our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, but they are great representatives of our mission to build champions in the classroom, the community, and competition. Both of them have gone above and beyond the call of duty by taking on additional roles in the department. I look forward to continuing to work with them for years to come as we continue to strive to make the department a beacon of pride for the University."
Kido is in her ninth year with the department after previously serving as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration. Kido also served as Eastern Michigan's interim vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics from May to mid-July 2017 before Wetherbee's hiring.
She provides strategic direction and oversight of department initiatives in the areas of sport administration, student-athlete support, and human resources. Kido serves as sport administrator for women's basketball, women's gymnastics, and volleyball, along with oversight of EMU's student-athlete support services, sports medicine, sports performance, and compliance operations.
Extensively engaged in intercollegiate athletics nationally, Kido is on the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Committee. She was a member of the NCAA Degree-Completion Consultants Task Force, which annually awards nearly $1 million in scholarships to former student-athletes who completed their eligibility, but did not complete graduation requirements. Previously, she represented the Mid-American Conference on the NCAA Student-Athlete Experience Committee (SAEC) and the NCAA Division I Committee for Legislative Relief, her second stint working with this group. Additionally, Kido served on the Board of Directors and the Legislation and Governance Committee of the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC), NCAA Legislative Council, and NCAA Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet and chaired the MAC Infractions Committee from 2015-17.
Kido previously worked at Xavier University, the University of Oklahoma, The Ohio State University, and UCLA.
Rowdon is in his sixth year as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs for the Eastern Michigan University athletic department. He oversees the External Division including marketing, corporate partnership efforts, facility operations, media relations, and ticket sales and operations. He also leads strategies to increase ticket sales, merchandise, and other revenue streams. In addition, Rowdon oversees the sports of baseball, rowing, and women's soccer.
Throughout his career, Rowdon has been recognized numerous times by the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) as a "Best Of" award winner for his efforts. At EMU, his efforts were pivotal in the school being a two-time NACMA Awards winner, both for the 2021-22 academic year. EMU earned the Gold Award in the fan giveaway category (tying in HEATH candy bars to new head coach Stan Heath's first home game) and the Bronze Award for a season ticket campaign for men's and women's basketball season tickets. Furthermore, EMU was awarded Paciolan's Newcomer of the Year at the 2021 PACnet Awards.
Rowdon has previous experience at Texas Tech University, Arizona State University, Old Dominion University, LSU, Georgetown University, California State University Long Beach, and Virginia Tech University.
Since 2017 the trio have helped Eastern Michigan win 16 Mid-American Conference team championships and 92 MAC individual championships. Furthermore, 298 EMU student-athletes have collected All-MAC honors and 703 have collected Academic All-MAC recognition under his leadership. All told, Eastern has won 155 MAC team titles since 1973, the most of any league institution over that span.
In addition, Wetherbee and company continue to work on the department's plan to build a safe and highly-effective atmosphere for its student-athletes through the continual revitalization of its athletic facilities. EMU opened the Student-Athlete Performance Center on Aug. 27, 2019, marking the first major construction project on the athletics campus since the opening of the Convocation Center in 1998. Additional projects include artificial turf at the soccer/lacrosse complex, a locker room for the swimming & diving team, and an expanded erg room for the rowing program.
Under Wetherbee's guidance, Eastern Michigan Athletics has secured more than $20 million in cash and pledges to help upgrade facilities and further enhance the student-athlete experience. EMU has generated six gifts of $1 million or more, including the first seven-figure gift in Eastern Athletics history, an $8 million gift for a GameAbove Golf Performance Center (the largest gift in school history), $2.7 million to rename the campus arena in honor of former student-athlete and NBA Legend George Gervin, and a $1 million sponsorship (largest in school history).
Eastern Michigan also continues to expand opportunities for female student-athletes with the addition of women's lacrosse as the EMU's 19th varsity sport. The team begins play in the 2022-23 academic year.
"Erin and Andy have been instrumental to our success since my arrival here at Eastern Michigan," said Wetherbee. "Not only have they served as mentors to our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, but they are great representatives of our mission to build champions in the classroom, the community, and competition.
