Eagles prepare for regular season closer in Dexter, Mich.
DEXTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country teams will return to Washtenaw County to host the annual EMU Fall Classic, Oct. 21. The meet, held at the Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich., is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
The day opens with the men's 5k race, where Eastern will compete against strong Great Lakes Region programs in the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. At 5 p.m., the women will run the same 5k course against the same field as the men.
As Eastern prepares for the Mid-American Conference Championships, Oct. 29, the Eagles will turn to a young lineup at the EMU Fall Classic. The men's team will run three freshmen: Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Deer Lakes), Brady Messer (Mason, Ohio-Mason), and Grant Sweningson (North Tustin, Ca.-Foothills) alongside junior Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron).
EMU's women's team will employ a similar strategy, running three freshmen of their own: Kiera Hansen (Freeland, Mich.-Freeland), Cara Weber (Union, Ky.-Larry A. Ryle), and Elena Wheeler (Plymouth, Mich.-Salem). Sophomore Ella Garvin (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike) rounds out the lineup for the women's team.
Following Friday's meet, the Eagles will depart for Athens, Ohio, for the MAC Championships, Oct. 29. The meet, at the Ohio University Golf Course, is slated for an 11 a.m. start with the women's 6k. The men's 8k race will follow one hour later at noon.
