Deonte Mack Named EMU’s Director of Sports Performance

Mack had previous stops at Akron, Indiana, and Kentucky
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Deonte Mack, the Director of Athletic Performance at the University of Akron, has been named the Director of Sports Performance at Eastern Michigan University, Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee announced today, Jan. 22. Mack began his duties at EMU on Jan. 10.
Mack will oversee the athletic department's sports performance program, while working directly with the football program.
Mack joined the EMU Sports Performance staff after serving as the Director of Athletic Performance and Strength and Conditioning coach at Akron. He joined the Zips' program in September of 2020, working directly with the football team.
In the Rubber City, Mack oversaw all aspects of the training and athletic performance/recovery program, while having secondary guidance over nutrition.
Mack arrived at Akron after serving four years (2016-20) as the assistant director of performance/sport science integration at the University of Kentucky.
During his tenure with the Wildcats, Kentucky appeared in four bowl games, including victories over 12th-ranked Penn State (27-24) and Virginia Tech (37-30) following the 2018 and 2019 campaigns, respectively. During the four-year stretch, the Wildcats posted a 32-20 overall record and 16 wins over Southeastern Conference opponents.
Prior to his time at Kentucky, Mack served four seasons as assistant strength and conditioning coach with the football program at Indiana University.
A native of Elkhart, Ind., Mack played four seasons as a defensive end for the Hoosiers from 2007-10, where he appeared in 36 career games, including nine starts. He recorded 45 tackles, two sacks, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, and one fumble recovery for IU. As a freshman, Mack appeared in 12 games and posted 18 tackles and one TFL, as Indiana went 7-6 and played in the 2007 Insight Bowl.
He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, along with a First Aid/AED/CPR certification and a USAW certification as a Sports Performance Coach.
Mack earned a bachelor's degree in African Diaspora & Cultural Studies from Indiana in 2011.
Mack and his wife, Haley, have three sons, K.J., Desmond and Trey.
