Eagles Earn Third Consecutive Victory Over the Titans

DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University soccer team defeated the University of Detroit Mercy, 2-1, Thursday afternoon, Aug. 12, at Titan Field in the team's lone exhibition match. The non-conference match was moved to the turf at UDM's campus after heavy rains pelted the playing surface at Scicluna Field.

The Eagles' offense chipped in goals in each of the halves. Senior Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay) put Eastern up early with a score in the third minute.

"Anytime we can get a win is great," Head Coach Scott Hall said. "Scoring two goals, one coming from a senior and the other a freshman, it was great to see what we are capable of. It was great to see our women come out and control the tempo of the game and force the opponent to play our style of soccer."

The Green and White continued its attack through the entirety of the first half, tallying a pair of late corner kick chances before the break.

To begin the second half, both squads fought one another for possession.

EMU finally broke through in the 79th minute with a header from freshman Chloe Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) to push the advantage to two goals. Freshman Lexy Alston (Amherst, Ohio-Marion L. Steele) earned the assist on what would be the game-deciding score.

The Titans answered in the final minutes of regulation, however, it was too little too late as the Eagles earned their third consecutive victory over Detroit Mercy.

Eastern Michigan now looks ahead to its season opener, Thursday, Aug. 19, at home against Illinois State University. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Scicluna Field.

Fans are reminded that face coverings are not required outdoors regardless of vaccination status. Additionally, the University still requires everyone who is visiting campus to complete a COVID Screening Form. On the day of the event, please utilize the following link at https://covid.emich.edu to complete the screening form prior to arriving on campus.
