EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com) – After seeing Volunteer Coach Tori Franklin punch her ticket to the 2020 Summer Olympics, the Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw another member of the Eagle family qualify for Tokyo. Former Eagle triple jumper Donald Scott will join Franklin later this summer for his outstanding outing in the triple jump tonight, June 21, inside Hayward Field. The former Eagle is the first athlete in school history to qualify for the Olympics in the event.
"I am so proud of this young man, and I've heard from so many of our alumni expressing their congratulations and their Eastern pride in Donald for his accomplishments, becoming the latest in our long line of Eastern Olympians," said Associate Head Coach Sterling Roberts. "This is the product of and a testament to Donald's hard work and perseverance. And now we get back to work to prepare for Tokyo!!"
Overall, EMU has had a track representative at the summer Olympic Games since Hayes Jones in 1960. The Eagles have had 19 representatives in 61 years, 16 men and three women.
"Donald has worked very hard for this moment since the last Olympic trials five years ago," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "We're really happy for him and it's exciting to continue our streak of having an EMU athlete in every Olympic Games since 1960. Coach Sterling Roberts has done a great job of mentoring Donald and we're thrilled that they're heading to Tokyo!"
The 2015 graduate had a strong showing during the qualifying round of the competition, leaping 16.81m for the runner-up position and a spot in the finals, June 19. Today, the Apopka, Fla. native recorded a bound of 16.98m during his third attempt to help place him in the final round. Scott's best jump came one attempt later as he notched a second-place finish with a bound of 17.18m to ensure his spot on Team USA at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
"I watched Donald jump in his very first competition for EMU at Rynearson Stadium in 2011," added Parks. "It's been amazing to watch his journey."
Next up for EMU, former Eagle Willy Fink is set to compete at Hayward Field on Thursday, June 24, in the 5000m race. Currently, the Virginia Tech volunteer coach boasts a personal-best time of 13:17.15. The first round of the 5000m is scheduled for 11:04 p.m.
