McNeill, Frantz, and Frederick all tally first points of the season
DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Led by three Eagles all recording their first points of the season, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team took down Northern Illinois University, 3-0, March 14, in Mid-American Conference action at the NIU Soccer Complex.
The victory will be one for the books for Head Coach Scott Hall, as the head man notched his 200th career victory against the Huskies.
Redshirt senior Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) and Kylie Frantz (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) each tallied their first goals of the season during the first 45 minutes of play to lead the Eastern (2-1) to victory.
Senior Chelsea Abbotts (Ottawa, Ontario-Mother Teresa), aided by the EMU defense, notched the team's first clean sheet win since the beginning of the 2019 season, Aug. 25 at Detroit Mercy. Abbotts tallied three saves on eight shots faced en route to the win.
Through the first 12 minutes of play, it was quiet on the offensive for both sides, with sophomore Amanda Cripps (Bradford, Ontario-Trinity Catholic) recording the lone shot of the contest to that point.
McNeill broke Eastern's scoring drought in the 13th minute, connecting on a pass from senior Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden) right outside the six-yard box, sending the ball to the back of the net and give the Green and White the lead, 1-0.
Adding to its lead six minutes later, the Eagles were awarded a corner kick after a shot by McNeill was deflected out of bounds by the Huskies (1-2). Lining up to the left of the goal, Frantz perfectly executed a corner kick that slipped past the NIU defense to put Eastern up, 2-0, a lead it would maintain to the halftime break.
One last offensive spurt came for the Green and White in the 78th minute, as McNeill corralled a blocked NIU shot deflection. Receiving the ball back from Frantz around midfield, the redshirt senior proceeded to dribble the rest of the way up the field, taking the keeper one-on-one and scoring her second goal of the match to seal the win, 3-0.
Hosting two home matches in the upcoming week, Eastern Michigan returns to the pitch Thursday, March 18 against Toledo, and Sunday, March 21 against Ball State. The games are set to begin at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
