Eagles Tally Four Wins on First Day of EMU Last Chance Invite

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team opened the first day of the EMU Last Chance Invite with four wins and three career-best performances, Feb. 26, at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles squared off against competition from Bowling Green State University, Oakland University, and the University of Toledo.

Picking up right where she left off, senior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) captured the 1-meter diving crown for the sixth time this season, capturing her eighth-overall season win with a 288.10 score in the preliminary round and 310.15 in the finals. EMU completed the podium sweep in both rounds of the event, with freshman Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) and sophomore Keira Veltigian (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) taking second and third places, respectively. Hughes finished with a score of 282.10 in the prelims, and set a season-high in the finals with a 291.40 mark, while Veltigian scored 265.60 and 289.20 in the respective rounds.

The Eagles secured two wins in the preliminary swimming events, coming in the form of a season-best 55.98 100 butterfly swim from senior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) and a 23.58 50 freestyle swim from senior Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany), also a season-best performance.

EMU saw a career-best performance in the morning, as sophomore Abigail Wenger (Upper Sandusky, Ohio-Upper Sandusky) clocked in a 1:06.37 in the 100 breaststroke for a new personal record.

In the evening session, the Green and White's 800 freestyle relay team of senior Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor), sophomore Carlin Hudson (Chattanooga, Tenn.-Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences), senior Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) and Staffeldt took the win with a time of 7:32.58. Staffeldt came close to defending her 50 free prelim title, finishing second overall in the final heat with a time of 23.69.

Notching career-bests during the final session of the day were classmates Hofmann and Staver. Hofmann marked a 5:01.03 in the 500 freestyle finals to secure a new personal standard, while Staver finished the 200 back final in 2:05.04 for her new career-best.
