Seniors Show Out to Down Bowling Green, 188.5-179.5

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green State University, 188.5-179.5, Jan. 29 at Cooper Pool. Five Eastern seniors tallied seven individuals wins, while EMU finished with eight total wins on the day.
Senior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) paced Eastern's diving squad, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Berger won 1-meter with a 273.90 showing, and posted a NCAA Zone C qualifying mark in 3-meter diving with a season-best 295.50 performance.
Senior Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) had a record day as she posted career-best marks in both the 200 and 500 freestyle, winning both events with times of 1:54.68 and 5:06.72, respectively.
Continuing EMU's strong freestyle showing, senior Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) earned the 100 free title with a time of 52.56, while classmate Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) swam a 10:31.36 in the 1000 freestyle to take the win.
Senior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) earned her first win of the season, taking the top spot in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.56.
Rapien and Staffledt were joined by sophomore Lainie Bell (Atlanta, Ga.-Druid Hills) and freshman Abbey Whipple (State College, Penn.-State College Area) to win the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:32.80 mark, rounding out the wins for the Green and White.
The Eagles return to the pool next Friday, Feb. 5 in Rochester, Mich. to take on Oakland University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
