Track & Field Gears Up for Busy Weekend

The Eagles will compete in two meets, Jan. 29-30
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University track and field teams will be extremely busy this weekend with two meets going on simultaneously. On Friday, Jan. 29, most of the Green and White will participate in the Sid Sink Invitational hosted by Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Events are set to begin at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, multi-event members of the track and field team will be at Saginaw Valley State University for the Jet's Pizza Invitational in University Center, Mich. The invitational is a two-day event, spanning from Friday, Jan. 29 through Saturday, Jan. 30.
Last weekend, Eastern saw multiple Eagles notch personal-bests at the Mike Lints Alumni Open, Jan. 23. In total, the Green and White notched eight event wins, capturing five titles in the field and three on the track.
On the men's side, the distance runners are improving every week. Redshirt sophomore Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron) registered a career-high in the mile, crossing the finish line in 4:12.26. Brandal's time is the fastest among all Mid-American Conference competitors in the event.
Junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) blew away the competition in the 3000m with a red-hot time of 8:05.34. The Iceland native's performance was good for first place at the Mike Lints Alumni Open, finishing nearly nine seconds faster than the closest competitor. Moreover, Magnusson's mark is the fastest among all Mid-American Conference runners and ranks 16th in all of Division I.
Meanwhile, sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) and redshirt sophomore Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) both posted personal-bests in the 3000m, clocking in at 8:14.19 and 8:15.01, respectively. Their times rank second and third in the conference, respectively, as the men's distance runners currently control the standings in the 3000m.
The women's team saw strong performances last weekend, notably in the field events. Sophomore Antonia Woods (Winchester, Ohio-Groveport Madison) took first place in the long jump with a career-high 5.28m leap. Additionally, senior Ariel Floyd (Mount Clemens, Mich.-Chippewa Valley (Olivet College)) set a personal- best weight throw of 18.21m. For Floyd, she has set career-highs in the weight throw in her last two meets this season with her newest weight throw mark being the sixth-highest in the MAC.
Senior Savanah Luthman (Minster, Ohio-Minster) and sophomore Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) also registered personal-bests in the weight throw with tosses of 16.53m and 15.02m, respectively. For Luthman, her performance in the weight throw rounds-out the top-10 in the conference.
Lastly, senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) finished first in the shot put as she produced a career-best toss clearing 15.29m, the fourth-best mark in the MAC this season. Kent State's Grace Tennant currently holds the top spot with a shot put of 15.99m.
