Four Eagles Receive USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

EMU's four selections ranked second in the MAC
NEW ORLEANS, La. (EMUEagles.com) – Four Eastern Michigan University women's track & field student-athletes were named All-Academic Athletes for the 2020 NCAA Division I Track and Field season Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Redshirt senior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School), junior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception), junior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's-Texas Southern), and sophomore Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peters) were EMU's recipients of the USTFCCCA honors.
Criteria for earning All-Academic Athlete status included a minimum grade point average of 3.25, having completed at least two semesters at the institution and have finished in the top 96 on the NCAA Division I descending order list in any championship individual event during the 2019-20 indoor season.
EMU's four honorees rank second in the Mid-American Conference, trailing only Akron (5). Overall, 20 MAC student-athletes garnered the prestigious honor.
An Actuarial Science & Economics major, Clarke competed in eight meets for the Eagles during the 2019-20 indoor season. She set the Eastern Michigan school record in the indoor weight throw with a mark of 19.37 meters at the conference meet, which was good-for fourth overall. Clarke also finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 18.51 meters at the Silverston Invitational, Feb. 21, while placing third in the weight throw at the Can-Am International with a mark of 18.25 meters.
Majoring in Sports Performance & Fitness entrepreneurship, Johnson earned First-Team All-MAC honors after winning the high jump with a mark of 1.74 meters at the MAC Indoor Championships, Feb. 28-29. She finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.71 meters at the Silverston Invitational, Feb. 21, and won the high jump at the SVSU Doug Hansen Open with a mark of 1.59 meters, Jan. 17. Johnson marked her EMU debut by winning the high jump at the GVSU Holiday Open with a mark of 1.70 meters, Dec. 6.
A Business administration major, Smith competed in six meets for the Eagles during the 2019-20 indoor season. She posted three top-10 finishes at the conference meet, as she placed third in the 5000m run with a time of 16:56.44, fifth in the 3000m run with a time of 9:54.94, and seventh in the mile run with a time of 4:55.16. Smith took fifth place in the 3000m run with a time of 9:41.21 at the Music City Challenge, Feb. 14-15, and finished seventh in the mile at the Meyo Invitational with a time of 4:53.51, Feb. 7-8. She also placed third in the mile at the Can-Am International with a time of 4:55.95, while finishing fourth in the 800m run with a personal-best time of 2:16.11, Jan. 25.
Wade, who is a Therapeutic Recreation major, was named First-Team All-MAC after winning the 60m hurdles at the MAC Indoor Championships with a personal-best time of 8.43, Feb. 28-29. She finished fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.57 at the Silverston Invitational, Feb. 21, and took second place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.57 at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 14.. Wade won the 60m hurdles at the Can-Am International with a mark of 8.63, Jan. 25, while also claiming first prize in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.71 at the SVSU Doug Hansen Open, Jan. 17.
