YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team celebrates the achievements of Marie Mayerova (Kremlin, Czech Republic) and Essence Eaton (Soutfield, Mich.-southfield Lathrup), the team's pair of seniors who will be moving on next season after graduating from EMU.

The team's No. 1 singles player, Mayerova was in the midst of a spectacular season before its abrupt ending due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Czech-born redshirt tied for the team lead with 13 singles wins, and was second on the team with 10 doubles victories. She finished the year as one of just two Eagles with at least 10 wins in both singles and doubles competition.

A victim of the shortened season, Mayerova was poised with the potential to make an impressive run in conference play, as she played her best tennis near the seasons end. Her stellar play included a five-match win streak, which ran Feb. 23-29, and included a pair of straight-set, 6-0, 6-0, victories over Morgan State University and Niagra University.

Mayerova finished her EMU career with better than 40 singles wins.

Joining Mayerova is Eaton, whose off-court story is as unique as any.

A local athlete, Eaton was born and raised just 20 minutes from EMU's campus, in nearby Southfield, Mich. Fixated with tennis from a young age, Eaton sought tutelage from her father before joining the prep ranks at Southfield Lathrup High School.

Following her prep career, she arrived in Ypsilanti, where she planned to focus solely on academics. Upon learning about walk-on possibilities to join Head Coach Jayson Wiseman and the Eagles, however, tennis quickly came back to the forefront of her life.

After a successful walk-on stint with the Green and White, Wiseman surprised Eaton with a full-ride athletic scholarship for the 2019-20 campaign, her senior season. She saw action in 12 matches overall, including seven dual matches during the season.

Known by all throughout the program as a testament to hard work, dedication, and sacrifice, the team will surely miss both Mayerova and Eaton. Wiseman, the staff, players, and the athletic department wish both an incredible start to their next chapter, and thank the duo for their contributions to Eastern Michigan.
