The month will be filled with fun content for all EMU fans to enjoy!
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Fifty years ago, the Eastern Michigan University baseball program made history. Commanded by legendary Head Coach Ron Oestrike, the then-Hurons finished with an impressive 41-11 overall record, and claimed the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship.
The following is an excerpt from a release by the "EMU Sports News," written by former EMU Sports Information Director, John Fountain, dated June 15, 1970.
One week ago, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team was rated the top college division team in the nation by Collegiate Baseball Magazine and the Hurons' head coach Ron Oestrike was voted "Coach of the Year," by the 400 voting members of the NAIA Baseball Coaches Association.
Today, both the team and the coach are basking in the glory that comes from living up to expectations made by the pollsters and the coaches.
A half-century later, the 1970 team is still considered one of the very best to ever play, any sport, at Eastern Michigan. To celebrate the team's success and once again help its members to "bask in the glory," The Eastern Michigan University Athletics Media Relations Office, along with the EMU baseball Head Coach Eric Roof, are excited to announce a month-long series of content and social media-based material that will pay tribute to the 1970 squad and its members.
Each week during the month of June, Eastern fans can expect a variety of fun and interactive content. Every Monday and Friday will feature interactive social media campaigns such as trivia and fun-facts, while Wednesdays will focus on highlighting players from the historic roster. On Tuesday and Thursday, fans can look forward to a more in-depth look at each of the six games the team played as part of the double-elimination National Championship tournament to close their magnificent run. Members of the coaching and media relations staffs will also host virtual Zoom calls featuring members of the 1970 team. Those videos will be made public on the EMUEagles.com website and throughout social media.
"One of the most important jobs that I have as the leader of our baseball program is to honor the Script E and our amazing teams and alumni," commented Roof. "The 1970 team not only put Eastern Michigan baseball on the map, but is still, and will forever be, one of the best examples of championship success that our University has seen. We look forward to honoring the team in a much-deserved way during this, the 50th anniversary, of their championship!"
