EMU Student-Athletes Turn In Another Award Winning Season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — It was another record-setting season in both athletics and academics for Eastern Michigan University student-athletes in 2019-20.

Eastern Michigan won its fifth consecutive women's cross country title while the women's indoor track & field team won its seventh Mid-American Conference championship. Women's soccer finished as the tournament runner-up, while women's basketball earned berth into the semifinals for the first time since 2015. Additionally, swimming & diving took third-place at the MAC Championship and volleyball finished in third in the West Division race.

On the men's side, the men's cross country team notched its 23rd MAC title. Men's indoor track & field finished as the runner-up at its championship, while football punched its ticket to the postseason for the second consecutive season with an appearance in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit. Men's basketball clinched the Michigan MAC Trophy with a 67-63 victory over Central Michigan, Feb. 29. The trophy, which rotates based on the team with the best head-to-head record between Eastern, Central, and Western, has been won by Eastern in three of the last four years.

Having already won three MAC team titles and 11 individual league championships, the 2019-20 campaign was on pace for one of the most successful seasons in Eastern Michigan history before the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the entire spring sports season.

For their efforts, 40 EMU student-athletes earned All-MAC honors (16 - first team, 20 - second team, three - third team, and one honorable mention) in 2019-20. Additionally, the conference office acknowledged EMU student-athletes on 22 different occasions for Player of the Week accolades.

Furthermore, 14 student-athletes were singled out for MAC Distinguished Scholar Student-Athletes with 90 earning Academic All-MAC accolades. A total of four EMU standouts were selected for the prestigious weekly MAC Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to just one male and one female student-athlete from nominees of all 12 league schools.
