EMU Athletics will recognize and share stories of the Class of 2020

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – An accomplished member of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team, Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage) successfully balanced a demanding schedule on the track and in the classroom during his time with the Eagles.

Beckom made his debut for EMU at the Simmons-Harvey Invite hosted by the University of Michigan, Jan. 14, 2017, competing in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. He captured his first two event titles at the Don Kleinow Invitational, April 20, 2018, where he won the 100-meter race in 10.74 seconds, before his 4x100-meter squad finished in first place with a time of 41.17. One week after setting a career-best 200-meter time of 22.29 at the Hillsdale "GINA" Relays, Beckom guided the Green and White to victory the 4x100-meter relay at the Toledo Invitational with a time of 41.01, May 3-4, 2018.

Beckom started the 2019 outdoor season on a winning note, claiming first prize in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.62 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, March 15-16. He also finished the campaign with high marks, setting a personal-best in the 100-meter dash at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships with a time of 10.66, while earning Second-Team All-MAC honors in the 4x100-meter relay as the Eagles clinched second place with a mark of 40.82. During his final indoor campaign, Beckom set his fastest time in the 60-meter dash as he clocked in at 6.90 during the preliminary heats at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 7-8, 2020.

Reflecting on his time with the Green and White, Beckom said, "Dear EMU, coming to Eastern in 2016, I focused on being an athlete as if it was the biggest part of me. One thing I learned is that you can make more of an impact in your surroundings and in yourself by not just focusing on a season (or two in my case). Over the past three years living in Ypsilanti, I grew into being the man I am today. I built a close relationship with Assistant Head Coach Sterling Roberts over the years, and in 2018, he switched my practices from 3 p.m. with the team to 6 a.m. alone, freeing up time so I could become an undergraduate researcher with Dr. Chow's Psychology Youth and Relation Lab. This lead to me learning with doctoral students, assisting in studies, and I published my own study and presented it at the 39th EMU Undergraduate Symposium.

In 2018-2019, I worked with EMU Sports Ticket sales and I became a TRIO SSS Mentor for 10 first generation students and low-income students on campus. This same year, I became a Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative, helping lead the Men's Track and Field Team in volunteering and leadership. This last and final year, I worked with Eastern Athletics making graphic designs for the Men's Track and Field team and interned with the Eastern Sports Marketing team. Furthermore, I worked on the SAAC Diversity and Mental Health Committee and was chosen to be the male representative of EMU for the MAC Mental Health Summit in Cleveland, Ohio. Eastern gave me so many opportunities that I accomplished more than I ever imagined.

Those accolades to me are just as important as double majoring in Psychology and Communications, making Dean's List five times, Academic All-MAC five times, Second Team Outdoor All-MAC in 2019, and scoring in the MAC three times. What I hope the next student-athlete takes from my letter is that you can do anything you want to do here. Professors like Dr. Chow and Dr. O'Grady will support you in your academic endeavors, coaches like Roberts will help you. The athletic department will find you internships that fit your field if you express your needs. Step out of your comfort zone, so that when your final season is over like mine, you had the chance to be everything you wanted to be. Sincerely, Sean Beckom II."

In addition to his on-track accomplishments and community service, Beckom was a three-time Indoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC honoree and a two-time Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC selection. The Saginaw, Mich., native graduated this spring with a double major in Psychology and Communications.
